Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros has been listed as out indefinitely, leaving the Flyers short defenseman, once again.

The Philadelphia Flyers made moves near the NHL trade deadline to bolster a defense that was sorely missing Chris Pronger. It’s a good thing that Paul Holmgren targeted defense, because two more of the Flyers’ top defensemen, All Star Kimmo Timonen and Andrej Meszaros, have joined the injured list with lower body injuries.

Kimmo Timonen had played in 248 straight NHL games before missing last night’s game against the Washington Capitals. Timonen has been consistent and durable, but recently has been visibly off of his game. It is rumored to be a back injury keeping Timonen off the ice indefinitely.  Timonen has contributed 2 goals and 34 assists this season and is a plus 8.

Andrej Meszaros is another of the guys who has stepped up and taken on more ice time and responsibility in the absence of Pronger, and has done a solid job for the Flyers this season.  Meszaros has scored 7 goals and added 18 assists this season while managing a +6. He leads the Flyers with 144 hits.  There was no word on the exact nature of Meszaros’ injury.

With two of their best d-men out, new acquisitions Nicklas Grossman and Pavel Kubina saw expanded roles against the Caps, and it can be assumed that they two will be leaned upon until Meszaros and Timonen return to action.

Rookie defenseman Erik Gustafsson was recalled from the Adirondack Phantoms, and teamed with Adreas Lilja, who was also rejoining the lineup.
Both Meszaros and Timonen have been listed as out indefinitely. No timetable has been given for their return.
