There is no better test to start the season than facing the defending Stanley Cup Champions who swept you on the way to glory.

The new-look Flyers passed that test.

The orange and black defeated the black and gold Boston Bruins 2-1 to start their season on the right foot. Claude Giroux and new comer Jakub Voracek netted the goals for the Flyers, both in the first period.

The team was outplayed and outmatched early by the team that raised its Stanley Cup banner tonight, and it seemed like they may need some time to work on their chemistry. However, 39-year-old active points leader Jaromir Jagr and young phenom Claude Giroux helped change that quickly.

Jagr set up Giroux on a highlight reel power play goal in the first period to get the Flyers’ scoring underway. When Giroux received the pass, he kicked it from his skate to his stick (which he was holding with one hand), and scored on Tim Thomas as he was crashing forward into the net. It’s obvious that Jagr and Giroux are on the same page and will be a big threat in the offensive end all season long. Chris Pronger got the secondary assist on the goal.

The Flyers second goal came from Jakub Voracek, who found the puck on his stick in the slot and just threw it on net. The puck went through the five-hole of Thomas and put the Flyers up 2-1 with less than 5 seconds left in the first period. Andrej Mexzaros and Wayne Simmonds assisted on the goal, which was the eventual game winner.

Ilya Bryzgalov was spectacular in net, stopping 22 of 23 shots in his first game, and victory, as a Philadelphia Flyer. He finished with a .957 save percentage, and allowed his only goal on a Brad Marchand breakaway. His glove save on Marchand later in the game was a highlight save that will most likely make its way on Sportscenter tomorrow.
