Flyers Winger James Van Riemsdyk became the subject of a report saying that he was intentionally holding up surgery to repair his right hip to stop a potential trade with Columbus for Rick Nash. The Flyers have refuted the report.

WIP’s Howard Eskin tweeted yesterday that Flyers’ winger James van Riemsdyk was holding up a potential trade to Columbus for Rick Nash by refusing to have surgery on what the team has termed a torn labrum in his hip.

Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgren rebuffed that report yesterday saying that the hold up around JVR’s surgery was because of an infection in the winger’s foot. The same foot that he fractured on March 1st that kept him out of action until the playoffs. Holmgren also denied that the Flyers have any such deal in place that would bring Rick Nash to Philly.

I tend to believe Homer to some extent on this one. Bringing Nash here would bring a huge cap hit to the already cap-strapped Flyers. Moving van Riemsdyk would only free up a bit more than half of what the Flyers would need to accommodate Nash. It also makes little sense for any athlete to try to hold up a surgery. All that does is delay your rehab and potential return.

With all of that said, there just may be something to the Flyers wanting to move van Riemsdyk. There have been rumors blowing really for the past half year sending JVR to everywhere from Toronto for Luke Schenn, San Jose and now Columbus.

With a tremendous amount of upside, James van Riemsdyk could be a big trading chip for the Flyers. Nonetheless, it doesn’t appear anything is imminent, and so long as JVR is still awaiting surgery, the chances are pretty slim.

The Flyers appear to be set with scoring to some extent and it would seem more likely that the Flyers would target a defenseman if a move were to be made, however, this is not the first time the Flyers have been linked to Columbus’ Captain Rick Nash. With the playoffs now settled, the July 1st drop dead date for free agency looms largely on the horizon. It will be interesting to see what the Flyers do this season after a shocking offseason last year.
