The Philadelphia Flyers’ extended Wayne Simmonds’ contract for 6 more years. Simmonds set career highs in goals and points in his first season with the team.

As the threat of an NHL lockout becomes more and more likely by the day, the Flyers locked up one of their more recent additions for quite a long time.

Wayne Simmonds came to Philadelphia as part of the Mike Richards trade to Los Angeles. While Simmonds was part of the deal, the main focus there was Brayden Schenn. Wayne Simmonds had a pretty special first year with the Flyers, however, and so the Flyers made the move to lock Simmonds up long term. Wayne Simmonds set career highs in goals with 28 and points with 49.

The deal is reportedly worth $24 million over 6 years. Simmonds still has 1 year remaining in his contract, so the extension will not kick in until 2013.

The 6 year deal comes as the NHL is trying to limit the length of contracts to 5 years, and is also trying to reduce player salaries by 24%. While there had been optimism that a lockout could be avoided, more recently it looks like the sides are too far apart to reach a deal by the September 15th deadline.
