Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers signed a 6 year, $28.5 million contract extension with the Flyers today. He led the team with 37 goals last season.

The Philadelphia Flyers did something today that a lot of people thought would not happen… They re-signed Scott Hartnell.

Hartnell, according to reports, has signed a 6-year contract extension worth $28.5 million. A little over a month ago, Hartnell announced that he’d like to get a deal done to stay in Philly. Today, he got his wish.

Scott Hartnell was named to his first All Star Game last season and set career highs in goals (37) and points (67). Hartnell’s 37 goals led the team.

Hartnell has been the object of some fans’ ire over the years, having developed a reputation for taking bad penalties at inopportune times and for being a bad skater. His penchant for flailing around on the ice has been turned into a charity that Hartnell has used to do good. After battling a preseason injury and getting off to a slow start, many called for Hartsy’s trade.

Instead, Hartnell battled through and wound up on the Flyers top line with Jaromir Jagr and fellow All Star Claude Giroux. The chemistry was undeniable and the trio was responsible for some gaudy numbers last season.

The signing of Hartnell comes on the heals of a 6-year extension for Wayne Simmonds and a 4-year deal for Jakub Voracek.

“We have a great team, a great bunch of guys. We have a great future and chance to win a Stanley Cup. Obviously, that was a big part of it. I want to win. I play hockey to win. We’ve got a good thing going.” Hartnell said of wanting to stay in Philly.

Hartnell is currently representing the Flyers for the NHLPA as players and owners try to avoid another lockout. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has cited September 15th as the date a deal must be reached by to avoid a lockout. Oddly, one of the issues the owners are pushing is to limit contract terms to no more than 5 years.

If I were a betting man, I’d have to think that a long extension for Claude Giroux would be next.

The #Hartnelldown Foundation was born this year and supports charities in the US and Canada that support youth hockey. Visit the site, buy some gear and support a great cause and a great Flyer!
