Wayne Simmonds goes out with an injury, the Flyers fall to 2-6-0, and fans begin to panic. These were the main headlines after the Flyers recent loss to Washington. The Flyers returned home after a terrible week of hockey to take on the Carolina Hurricanes, who entered the game with a 3-3-0 record.   The Flyers offense started out slow but picked it up very quickly. An early power play gave the Flyers a chance to jump in front. Kurtis Foster jumped on the opportunity and netted his first in a Flyers uniform with assists from Matt Read and Sean Couturier. A even-strength rush by the Hurricanes drew all five Flyers to the puck, which left room for Joni Pitkanen to net his first of the season on a pass from Eric Staal. A three-on-one breakaway left Max Talbot and Braydon Coburn with opportunities to knock in a rebound off of a Jakub Voracek shot. Coburn finished the rush by putting it in the net. The goal was also his first of the season. Voracek and Brayden Schenn were rewarded with the assists, but Talbot should have gotten the point. A minute later, the Flyers went on their second power play. A rush in the front of the net resulted in a goal from Danny Briere between the crowd. The Flyers were two for two on the power play in the first period.  Turnovers killed the Flyers early in the first but were lucky to only give up two goals. Eric Staal netted his sixth goal of the season off of a turnover by Luke Schenn. The Flyers ended the period with 11 shots. The second period was a different story for the orange and black. Mike Knuble netted his first goal for the Flyers since Game 6 of the 2009 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals off of a steal from Read behind the net. The Hurricanes were fed up with the play of goalie Dan Ennis and replaced him with Cam Ward. The Flyers did a great job in the second period with their turnover problem but could not stay out of the penalty box. The Hurricanes had three power play opportunities but Ilya Bryzgalov was superb, like he has been all season. News broke from Paul Holmgren that forward Wayne Simmonds had been diagnosed with a concussion. After the Canes' took a penalty for too-many-men-on the ice, Claude Giroux netted his third goal of the season with a shot from the wing. Giroux has been ridiculed for not shooting the puck as much as he should, but his power play performance tonight was very good. The Flyers ended the second period up 5-2 and were looking to continue their success in the third period. Well, an early penalty got the Canes back into the game when Patrick Dwyer scored from a Jordan Staal. Halfway through the period, the Flyers were being out shot 10-1. In fact, the Canes actually had 38 shots on net in the first half of the third period. The penalty kill was tremendous tonight as the Flyers killed off five of their six penalties. After the Flyers notched an empty net goal, the game ended. Bryzgalov, who has been tremendous all season, recorded 39 saves in the Flyers 5-3 victory. All in all, it was a great game for the orange and black, who were looking to bounce back after a rough start to the season. They stay home to take on the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that has been clicking on all cylinders offensively. Though the Flyers did not play a perfect, all-around game, a win is a win and that brings their season total to a record of 3-6-0. David A.
