Flyers stun Devils in overtime, 3-2; Poehling dominates

Ryan Poehling scored two goals as the Philadelphia Flyers knocked off the New Jersey Devils, 3-2 in overtime at the Prudential Center on Tuesday night.

To kick off the second game of the season between the two teams, it was Michael McLeod who opened the scoring with his second goal of the year. Nathan Bastian made a nice play with the puck behind the Flyers’ net, flicking the puck past a prone Egor Zamula and onto the tape of McLeod for a tap-in.

The Flyers would tie things up just over a minute into the second period. Jack Hughes made an ill-advised pass to the center of the ice, which was intercepted by Ryan Poehling. Poehling executed a one-two with a swarming Joel Farabee before dunking home the finish at the far post to tie the game.

The Devils would answer almost immediately, after Scott Laughton took a tripping penalty. Nico Hischier received a pass from Jack Hughes at the front of the net and went between his legs in front of Sam Ersson. Although Ersson was able to comfortably make the initial stop, the rebound squirted out to Jesper Bratt, who deposited the loose puck to restore New Jersey’s one-goal lead.

The game itself was not overly eventful, though it was packed with goals early on. Poehling would score again for the Flyers six minutes after Bratt, tying the game at 2-2. The 24-year-old jumped into the rush alongside Travis Konecny, received the pass, and buried the puck for his second tally of the night.

Heading into the third period, the pace of play remained tentative. Halfway through, Ersson stopped Curtis Lazar on a short-handed breakaway. The Devils began to open up and press more, but Bratt and Hischier were denied on their ensuing chances.

Mostly a slog, the Flyers and Devils trudged to yet another overtime period between them – the second time this season in as many games. Jack Hughes cut past Rasmus Ristolainen early in OT, but managed to escape without being called for tripping. At the other end, it was Vitek Vanecek stopping Farabee on a 2-on-1.
