We've been here before, you know. There is going to be an absolute cacophony of voices in our heads and in our faces over the next week-plus, yelling and screaming and whining and kicking down the borders of consciousness. NBC Sports will turn the contrast up on those oranges and blacks and whites and golds, and get rolling into a festival of rhetoric. In a way, we almost like the underdog mentality that comes with being a hockey fan. Hockey fans know their teams like the backs of their hands, and every little game moment is like having a beer with your favorite player. But the national media never seems to "get it"--it takes approximately 5 seconds of close listening to realize that everything being discussed on a national hockey broadcast is largely made up and you're mentally being pressed against a wall with a hand on your throat, being asked, BUT DON'T YOU THINK THAT THAT WAS A VETERAN MOVE BY KIMMO TIMONEN? WAS THAT AN UNBELIEVABLE MOVE BY MALKIN OR WH...

Sidney Crosby named NHL’s ‘Third Star’ of the Week
For someone that has only played in 22 games this season he has received two of these awards. During his first comeback in December he was named the ‘First Star’ of the Week. This time around he received the ‘Third Star’ after getting 6 points (3 goals, 3 assists) in the final three Penguin’s wins. Crosby finished the season with 37 total point (8 goals, 29 assists...
Ilya Bryzgalov Is Fearless, Unless He's Stuck With a Bear in the Forrest (Video)
Ilya Bryzgalov is one of the most entertaining athletes on the planet right now, and that has much more to do with things that he says off the ice than what he does on the ice. Of course, Bryzgalov really gained some notoriety with his repeated words of wisdom (that just so happened to coincide with a rash of poor play) on this year's version of HBO's 24/7. However, the Flyers...
Playoff Preview: How will the Flyers injuries effect the team?
The Philadelphia Flyers are preparing for a deep playoff run starting with cross state rival the Pittsburgh Penguins. While the Flyers are preparing, they need to look at the team’s current injuries and how the team will be affected by missing players.
The first and most obvious missing link is the team’s captain Chris Pronger.
Pronger has been out for the majority of the season...
Playoff Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins (4) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (5)
Playoff Preview: Pittsburgh Penguins (4) vs. Philadelphia Flyers (5)
If the season series is any type of foreshadowing, this first round matchup should not only the most intense, but the most exciting, action packed, drama filled series of maybe the entire 2012 NHL Playoffs. After sitting out much of the season, Sidney Crosby will lead his team against the cross-state rivals, the...
John Toperzer: Recapping Six Degrees of Pens-Flyers
Recapping the Six Games of the Pens-Flyers 2011-12 Season Series
Follow me on Twitter @JohnToperzer
Philadelphia beat the Pens, 3-2, on December 8 at Wells Fargo Center. Daniel Briere, Wayne Simmonds and Scott Hartnell all scored to give the Flyers a commanding 3-0 lead midway through the second period.
James Neal netted a power-play goal at the 14:10 mark of period...
Philadelphia Flyers Players Photoshopped with Zoo Animals
Warning, this post is incredibly stupid.
You can only analyze a series so much before it starts to drive you mad. So, instead of actual analysis, we've Photoshopped Flyers players with zoo animals.
Enjoy!
Go Pens.
Bryzgalov more Scared of Bears in Forrest the Penguins in Pittsburgh
Ilya Bryzgalov has never been shy to go out on a limb and make some whacky comments infront of the media this year since coming to a bigger market in Philadelphia. While getting prepared to ...
Briere leads huge Flyers comeback
Even as late as Wednesday morning, Danny Briere was admitting nothing other than that he was feeling better every day. Under orders not to say anything in the days following the upper back contusion he suffered at the hands of the Penguins’ Joe Vitale with a week to go in the regular season, Briere was doing his level best to make his lips move and provide no information. He was...
Ilya Bryzgalov Will Be Key to Flyers/Penguins Series
He is the $51 million man. The man Ed Snyder imported who would save the Philadelphia Flyers franchise from two decades worth of poor performances from the most important position in the toughest tournament in professional sports, goal tender in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
He is the man behind the mask, a universal mind, a guy with an off-beat sense of humor and a thick Russian accent...
Rob Simpson: 3 Series Open - 6 Key "Other" Guys
6 "other" guys to watch
1) Wayne Simmonds - strong on his feet, despite being -5 versus Pitt this season overall, he had 3 goals and 3 assists in 6 games. Look for this physical stalwart to score a big goal or two from in front. May be one of the last men standing, ha ha. Great pick-up by GM Paul Holmgren. Only 23-years-of-age, "Simmer" played every game...
GARTH: Where Ya Been Hidin, Danny Boy?
Joe Vitale of the Pens planted an April Fool's joke right on Danny Briere's kisser, thus, touching off the turf war in Pittsburgh back on April 1. Brayden Schenn's x-check to the spine of Sidney Crosby with the Flyers winning 5-3 was the composite stick that broke the camel's back fo Dan Bylsma and the Penguins. The Pens coach threw his checking line on the ice in...
Good weekend for Pittsburgh: Malkin hits 50 goals, Pirates take down Phillies
As most of the BB&G crew was out and about this weekend unable to post about the fantastic sports weekend we had, I thought I would do a quick review.
Pirates:
Even though the Pirates lost the home opener to Philadelphia on Thursday, 1-0 they bounced back in spectacular fashion. They took down the Phillies on Saturday night in the 10th inning after Rod Barajas doubled to center...
Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Three keys to ECQF victory
I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend. The "real" season begins tomorrow night in Pittsburgh with most pundits installing the Penguins as the favorite to prevail in their series with the Flyers.
The sentiment is understandable. The Penguins have more superstar power than Philly does, equal or superior depth in the supporting cast and have received more consistently...
Time to believe
Last week, when I saw the YouTube video of Scott Hartnell making his then-famous now-forgotten - nothing personal, Scottie, that’s just the way things go these days - Hulk Hogan impersonation, I thought of a friend of mine who did the same thing 15 years ago.
Only, he wasn’t doing it in front of 15 000 people, or to a guy dressed up as Hulk Hogan. He did it in an ice cold...
Whiteout Conditions Tonight
Whether you like it or not, the Pittsburgh Penguins are calling for a whiteout tonight. Obviously this only works if people wear white and you don't need to spend money on one of their "official" white t-shirts to take part. Most people don't.
If anything, having a whiteout in Pittsburgh will upset Jets fans, which is good. Winnipeg sucks.
