In an 82-game season, some ups-and-downs are expected for each team in the National Hockey League.

It's safe to say the Philadelphia Flyers are on the up side of the roller coaster ride over the past two weeks.

The Flyers defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina behind two goals by Claude Giroux and a solid outing by tonight's starting goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. The team has recorded a point in seven straight games dating back to their October 29th victory over the same Hurricanes team.

Giroux got the scoring started in this one just 1:19 into the first period, and added a goal less than three minutes into the second period to continue his high-scoring 2011-12 campaign. He nearly had a hat trick on the team's fourth goal, but the puck went off of Wayne Simmonds in front before reaching the back of the net.

The Flyers chased Canes' starting goaltender Cam Ward after scoring 4 goals on 17 shots, and ex-Flyer Brian Boucher came in and played solid in relief (10 saves on 11 shots).

Matt Read scored the team's fifth goal with five minutes left in the game to give the Flyers a two-goal lead and that's the way the game would end. Jakub Voracek got the puck at the blue line in his own zone and took off through the neutral zone, setting up a 2-on-1 with Read. Voracek threw the puck towards the net, and Read stretched out and knocked it home while one his way to the ice.

Read was shaken up on the play as he crashed into the boards hard, but he was back on the ice a few moments later.

After the game, both players commented on the play that gave the Flyers some breathing room.

"I'm fine now," said the rookie Read, "it could have been worse."

Voracek ripped himself, joking, "with a shot like mine, I need to pass it every time."

Sergei Bobrovsky got the start in net, saving17 of 20 shots (.850 save percentage) and improving his record to 3-0-1 on the season.
