The Vancouver Canucks took advantage of a surprise scoring attack and a commanding first period to defeat the Avalanche 3-1 at Rogers Arena on Wednesday.

The Hat Trick

Booth’s Big Start

David Booth entered Wednesday’s game against the Avalanche as one of Alain Vigneault’s hottest forwards and was eager to continue the trend early against Colorado.

Booth scored in his third straight game Wednesday with a sharp backhand past Jean-Sebastien Giguere only 13 seconds in the hockey game after Mason Raymond broke into the Avalanche zone to begin the game.

With his latest goal Booth now has now tallied 6 goals and 4 assists over his last 10 games.

Hansen Hammers Home

Jannik Hansen had a hard-working night on the forecheck against the Avalanche, keeping pursuit of the puck and putting pressure on the Avs’ defenders from Vancouver’s third line.

The trio of Jannik Hansen, Chris Higgins and Maxim Lapierrehad a solid night together generating eight shots altogether as a unit. Of those shots Hansen’s rocket from the left faceoff circle gave little chance for goaltending replacement Simeon Varlamov.

The perfect one-time feed from Cody Hodgson allowed Hansen to really step into the shot, ripping the puck off the crossbar and back down behind Varlamov.

Luongo Locks it Down

Roberto Luongo outlasted and outplayed Jean-Sebastien Giguere on Wednesday making 29 of 30 saves in the victory over the Avalanche.

Luongo was unable to keep Canuck-killer Milan Hejduk off the score sheet but limited the veteran to a lone assist as the Canucks kept Paul Stastny and the Avalanche to the outside all evening.

Kevin Porter found himself in all alone on Luongo late in the first period but was unable to slip the puck past Luongo on Colorado’s best missed opportunity of the night.

V’s Thoughts

The Canucks continue to improve on their overall performance and have finally broken the shootout streak that had so many Canucks fans singing the blues over the last several days.

After decided five of the previous six games in a shootout it was nice to see two teams decide a winner in the first sixty minutes on Wednesday.

The Canucks close a three-game home stand against the Toronto Maple Leafs in an early afternoon Saturday at Rogers Arena.

Quote

“After the second I was already getting mentally ready for the shootout,” Roberto Luongo said post-game. “It was nice to be able to get one in regulation.”
