The Dallas Stars announced today that they’ve signed defenseman Alex Goligoski to a four-year extension worth $18.4 million (about $4.6 million a season through 2015-16). Added Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk, “Alex Goligoski is one of our core players and we are very pleased to get him under contract during the prime of his career. Alex is a character person and one of the anchors of our blue-line. He’s a big part of our hockey club.” Goligoski was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (61st overall) and began his NHL career playing three games with them in the 2007-08 season.  He was part of the Penguins trade last season that brought James Neal and Matt Niskanen from the Stars. This is a great example of Pittsburgh’s depth and how one team’s “average” player is another team’s ‘core player’ (and, perhaps, both teams did make out equally well in that trade).
