I am sad to announce that former Sharks forward Tom Cavanagh has passed away at the age of 28. Born in Rhode Island, Cavanagh played his collegiate hockey in the New England area at Harvard University. Before playing for Harvard, the Sharks selected him in the sixth round with the 182nd overall pick. After his college career was over, he went to play for the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League. He returned to New England to play hockey when the Sharks’ AHL affiliate relocated to Worcester after Cavanagh’s first professional season. He made his NHL debut with the Sharks on April 3, 2008 against the Kings in the second to last regular season game of the 2007-08 season. On his very first shift in the NHL, he got an assist on a goal scored by Joe Thornton. He played 17 more games in the NHL during the 2008-09 season.
