Stars give NHL greats new roles with team

DALLAS-- Thursday was a big day for the Dallas Stars. Not only did the club announce a number of initiatives to commemorate the franchise's 20th season in the Lone Star State, but the organization also announced the addition of three familiar names to the front office in a variety of roles. Former Star Mike Modano, who retired from the game prior to last season, will re-join...

Benn negotiations remain confounding

Team executives in our major sports negotiate contracts all of the time and therefore see all sorts of scenarios. But, the rarest of them all is when they have a mountain of money and want to give it to a player, only to find out that his camp is somewhat reluctant to accept it. That appears to be the situation here, 72 hours before opening night in the NHL, as the Dallas Stars...

Modano returns to Stars for 20th season in Texas

Mike Modano is returning to the Dallas Stars for their 20th anniversary season, though he won't be on the ice. The Stars on Thursday announced the hiring of Modano as an executive adviser. The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame inductee will work on initiatives related to the ownership group, team broadcasts and corporate partnership. The highest-scoring American-born player in NHL history...

The Dallas Stars Start Celebrating Their 20th Anniversary

FRISCO, Texas - The Dallas Stars kicked off the club's 20th Anniversary by announcing several season-long initiatives in celebration of two decades in Dallas. The team officially announced the hiring of Stars great Mike Modano, who re-joins the club as Executive Advisor and Alternate Governor. Three-time Stanley Cup champion Mark Recchi has been hired to bolster the hockey...

Bill Meltzer: Star Gazing: Stars Pulled Trigger on Fistric a Little Soon

Ever since former first-round pick Mark Fistric had his seeming breakthrough 2009-10 season, he's been shuttling in and out of the Dallas Stars' long-term plans on defense. Yesterday, the team made clear that the impending unrestricted free agent was neither a part of the short-term or long-term plan. He was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for a third-round draft pick. ...

Bill Meltzer: Star Gazing: Eakin Is Coming Along Nicely, Glennie Isn't

The Dallas Stars decision last join to trade erstwhile second-line center Mike Ribeiro to the Washington Capitals for 21-year-old center prospect Cody Eakin and a second-round pick was a pretty clear indication that the Stars wanted to go in a different direction after narrowly missing the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. The subsequent acquisition of Derek Roy relieved...

Report: Former Bruin Mark Recchi to Join Dallas Stars’ Front Office

Just as the Bruins are finally getting set to take the ice for the 2013 season, one of the stars of the team’s 2011 Stanley Cup run is making a return to the game as well. Former Bruins forward and alternate captain Mark Recchi will join the front office of the Dallas Stars, the Dallas Morning News reports. The move is expected to announced at a news conference on Thursday. According...

Bill Meltzer: Star Gazing: Ice Breaker Event, Larsen Expectations

The Dallas Stars' Ice Breaker event is something that predates the NHL lockout. However, this year's version is being done on a much bigger scale than in past years. As with many NHL teams, the Stars will be opening their home arena doors for free in an event that is partially a routine practice session moved to a larger venue and partially a fan-oriented spectacle with a...

Trade: Edmonton acquires defenseman Mark Fistric from Dallas for third-round pick in 2013

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Mark Fistric from Dallas in exchange for a third-round pick at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. I would not recommend picking up Mark Fistric in any type of fantasy hockey format as he'll be recorded two assists in 60 contests last season with the Dallas Stars.Having said this, I'm very excited about this acquisition, Fistric is an Edmonton...

Richard Cloutier: Predicting The Biggest Oilers Trade Since Gretzky

I said a few blogs ago I was going to share with you a theory as to a huge Oilers move to occur during the Summer of 2013. The deal for Mark Fistric has me thinking the deal I'm going to suggest is even more possible now. Fistric is a "value-added" D man that is a bargain contract-wise. He'll stick around. In an effort to drag this trade-rumor out to build the...
