Things got pretty rough for Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen at the hockey World Championships. Playing for his native Sweden Franzen took a pretty hard cross-check as his country was getting routed by the Russians. The cross-check led to his nose being broken which came with a pretty good amount of blood loss. Wings general manager Ken Holland, who is in Helsinki to take in that site’s part of the world championships, was trying to get information on Franzen. “He got cross-checked in the head and was leaking a lot of blood,” Holland told the Free Press. (Detroit Free Press) There was no update on his condition but I’m sure he’ll be back on the ice for the Swedes next game. If these guys can get back on the ice quickly when its an NHL game then I’m sure they’ll do the same when it’s for their country. addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fmysportsrumors.com%2Fblog%2F2012%2F05%2F11%2Ffranzen-breaks-nose-at-worlds%2F'; addthis_title = 'Franzen+breaks+nose+at+W...

More from Red Wings GM Ken Holland abot Nicklas Lidstrom…and Brad Stuart

ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun spoke to Red Wings GM Ken Holland about the same subject that the Free Press’s Helene St. James broached in asking about a timeline for Nicklas Lidstrom’s decision as to whether he’ll continue playing, and LeBrun also asked Holland about Brad Stuart’s future in his “rumblings” column: “I don’t really need to know until the middle of June,...

Red Wings at the Worlds Friday, part 2: Swedes lose to diving Russians, Franzen’s nose broken

After Justin Abdelkader registered an assist in Team USA’s 3-2 OT win over Belarus, and Valtteri Filppula’s Finns imploded, dropping a 3-1 lead and losing 5-3 to Canada, I thought I’d take in a star-studded match-up between Sweden and Russia… And instead, what I watched left me angry as angry can be. Sweden did indeed surrender a 3-1 lead and lose 7-3 to Russia in no small...

Red Wings at the Worlds: Howard, Abdelkader shine for U.S; on ‘Kronwalling,’ Wings’ gear sale

Team USA displayed less than dominant form for the vast majority of their 5-3 victory over Belarus, but the Red Wings’ American representatives at the World Championships played very, very well for the U.S. Like remarkably, awesomely “well,” with Justin Abdelakder and Jimmy Howard starring in a 5-2 win against a Belarussian team which rallied from a 2-0 deficit and absolutely...

Justice for the Mule? Russian players may be disciplined for spearing, breaking Wings forward’s nose

Updated with a completely unrelated Valtteri Filppula Nike commercial for the hell of it: Red Wings forward Johan Franzen was speared by Alexei Emelin and then had his nose broken on a vicious cross-check to the face by Dmitri Kalinin (the Free Press’s Helene St. James reports that he’s going to be OK) in Sweden’s ugly 7-3 loss to Russia on Friday, but the IIHF’s website...

Oh sure, tease us with an Yzerman flashback…

While 12 members of the Red Wings’ organization participate in the World Championships, with Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg facing off this afternoon (at present, Zetterberg’s power play goal has given Sweden a 2-1 lead over Russia after 1 period), the Detroit Free Press does its best to make Wings fans remember what was—and what could be next spring—by re-posting an...

Bruins 1-0 Win Over Lightning, Red Wings 1950 Stanley Cup Clincher Among Top Game 7s in NHL History

There's nothing better in sports than the seventh game of an NHL playoff series. The intensity and anxiety created when both teams are facing elimination is unsurpassed. That point was driven home with three thrilling Game 7s in the opening round this year.
