The season came to an end well over a month ago for the Minnesota Wild (hard to believe, right?), but while fans sit at home trying to get excited about the Stanley Cup playoffs without their beloved team in action, the future has been shining brightly for the NHL club in the Lone Star state.
On Friday night, the Houston Aeros, the primary affiliate of the Wild (AHL), defeated the Binghamton Senators in game 1 of the Calder Cup Finals. Jed Ortmeyer scored twice as the Aeros did all of their scoring in the third period of their 3-1 win.
The current roster for Houston includes many players that have already been called up to the Wild, as well as those who stand an incredibly good chance of staying up with the big club at the start of the next season. The experience many of the young players on the roster, such as defensemen Jared Spurgeon who began to shine at the end of the NHL regular season, get could prove to be invaluable down the road.
