Found January 25, 2013 on Running With The Devils:
Washington Capitals (0-3-0) @ New Jersey Devils (2-0-0) This is the second home game of the season for the Devils and the first time we will be meeting the Washington Capitals at the rock this season. Adam Oates, former Devils assistant coach took the head coaching job vacated by Dale Hunter last summer. The Last Devils Game: The other night, the Devils took on the Flyers at home. The Devils quickly got out to a 1-0 lead on Zajac’s second of the season before the Flyers seemed to settle down and control the flow of the game. Marty had all the answers though and Clarkson scored his second of the season near the end of the 1st. After Kovalchuk put home a penalty shot to extend the lead to 3, the Flyers lost composure and eventually the game as Marty recorded his 120th career shutout. The Last Caps Game: Been kind of a disappointing start for the Caps. They’ve gotten off to an 0-3 record and really haven’t been in a game yet. They’ve given up 14 goals this s...

Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth absolutely robs Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky

Washington Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth completely robbed New Jersey Devils defenseman Marek Zidlicky on this play.  This has to be an early candidate for save of the year.  Zidlicky had 2/3 of the net open and Neuvirth just snagged it.  The Devils fans thought it was in and you can see almost an entire section behind the net start to celebrate and then become instantly disappointed...

Devils stay unbeaten with OT victory

NEWARK, N.J. - After blowing a two-goal lead in the third period by taking a string of five penalties, the New Jersey Devils didn't want to see the solid start to their season come to an end. "We just kept the faith," said veteran Ilya Kovalchuk, whose overtime goal with just 20.5 seconds remaining gave the Devils a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals Friday night...

All Brendan Shanahan

from Adam Proteau of The Hockey News, The Hockey News: With the shortened season, there has been an early acclimation period for players, coaches and officials. How have you seen the start of the season playing out? Brendan Shanahan: From what I’m watching, your’e right, everybody has an adjustment period. Coaches feel it, players, officials. Even players who’ve...

Making Your Own Luck

With 17:44 left in the second period Thursday, it was about to get ugly. To the Capitals’ credit, the team had already killed off a penalty they suffered in the opening minute of the game. The patterns—at least from the press box—looked more coordinated, as in, you could see them, even if nothing had resulted in an actual goal. But the Caps looked like they could be just one...

Though Washington...

Ilya Kovalchuk’s power play ice time

The last few days I have been looking at the percentage of a teams ice time for a given situation that a particular player is on the ice for.  So for instance, what percentage of the Leafs 5v5 even strength ice time was Joffrey Lupul on the ice in games in which Joffrey Lupul played. When I write a new

Canadiens-Capitals Preview

If the Washington Capitals' first two games have proven anything, it's that they are a work in progress struggling to learn a new system under a new coach. The shortened season makes it even more important for them to be a quick study. Washington looks to avoid its first season-opening three-game losing streak in nearly two decades Thursday night when it faces the visiting...
