It hasn’t been since 2006 when the Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup that the Hurricanes have won the Southeast Division. In arguably one of the easiest divisions in hockey in the past five seasons the Hurricanes have completely struggled. There have been a few seasons where the Hurricanes will muster out hope in the last two months of the season but there have been numerous in season issues with the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes struggles begin in the front office where they have had gone through three coaches since their Stanley Cup. The Hurricanes have been one of the worst teams in the free agent market in the past five seasons as well. Their three biggest signings in the past three years (in terms of money spent) Tomas Kaberle, Joe Corvo, and Tom Kostopoulos, all are no longer with the team. So the question is while teams like Los Angeles, Edmonton and Washington having built from the ground up since 2006 why are the Hurricanes consistently falling lower and lower in the stand...

Clarifying Rutherford – Hurricanes in the Rumors
Recently Jim Rutherford spoke with The News and Observers Chip Alexander. Some of Rutherfords comments seem to have been taken the wrong way by some who feel he isn’t doing enough.
It has been said that the Hurricanes are actually within reach of the playoffs but due to the number of games in hand that our opponents have the Hurricanes playoff chances are slim. Rutherfords...
Is Bryan Allen better than Tim Gleason?
With Carolina in sell mode this year, one guy who appears to be a on a lot of teams wish lists is our rugged blue-liner Tim Gleason, and why wouldn't a playoff contender want someone like Gleason? He plays over 20 minutes a night against the toughest competition, isn't afraid to get physical with the opposition and has a cap hit of only $2.75 million. Gleason brings a lot...
Carolina Hurricanes Mid-Season Awards
Technically, it isn't the midway point of the season but the All-Star break is generally a good time to assess a team's performance, so I am going to hand out awards to the Hurricane players who stood out in both positive and negative ways. It's been a year full of disappointments for Carolina but there are still a lot of things to point out and not all of them are bad...
Hurricanes' play no longer Staal-ed
Whether it's the new coach or the new year, something has gotten into Eric Staal.
Since Dec. 29 -- incidentally, two days after his brother Marc Staal was cleared for contact after suffering a concussion at the hands of Eric -- he has been on a scoring rampage with 16 points in 13 games.
Some fans were booing his every shift but after the dismal start it seems that Staal is...
Monday debate: is a blockbuster possible?
The trade speculation has been constant and will heat up even more.
The Canes' names have been out there: Tim Gleason, Tuomo Ruutu, Jaroslav Spacek, Bryan Allen. "UFA" might as well stand for Undetermined Future Acquisition, to read some of the trade gossip floating around the 'net.
But there are some in the Canadian media who want to float two other names: Eric...
Nash recalled from Checkers
The Canes have recalled cener Riley Nash from the Charlotte Checkers (AHL).
This marks the second career NHL recall for Nash, 22, who recorded one assist and averaged 10:46 of ice time in two games for the Hurricanes in December. Nash has scored six goals and earned 12 assists (18 points) in 41 games for the Checkers this season.

Gleason agrees to contract extension
Forget all the trade speculation about Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason. He's staying put.
The Canes announced today they have re-signed Gleason to a four-year contract extension that will pay him $3.5 million in 2012-13, $4.5 million in 2013-14 and 2014-15, and $3.5 million in 2015-16.

The Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman Tim Gleason to a four-year contract extension on Monday.
Aaron Musick: Should the Avs consider trading Quincey?
With Tim Gleason signing an extension and going off the market, the options for teams to pick up a free agent defenseman are dwindling, which could possibly help the Avs.
Currently the Avs have eight defensemen on their roster and it almost certain that one of them will be traded before the year is out. Most of the names fans would like to see moved are Ryan O'Byrne or Jan...
Canes go back to work amid rumors
It's back to work for the Canes today. Time to prepare for the final push.
But with just 31 games remaining and 10 points out of playoff position, how much of a push can the Canes make?
"It's hard to say," general manager Jim Rutherford says. "There's so much parity and you don't know how injuries will affect teams, or which teams will fall off. All...
