Found December 29, 2013 on Puck Drunk Love:
Some days aren't the best for Edmonton Oilers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Sure, he'll make combined $10 million this season between his bought out Philadelphia Flyer contract and the one he's earning now in Edmonton, and he's mostly played well with the Oil (a .916 save percentage in nine games despite a losing record). But some days, your old team comes back from a 3-2 deficit and scores a 5-on-3 goal to tie the game in the third period. And this is how you react. The CBC announcers -- Rick Ball and Kelly Hrudey -- were chiding Bryz for "negative body language" which is a bogus way of capitalizing on the fact that most people think he's nuts and a bad guy in the room. But hey, minutes later they were saying they still "liked" the shootout so really, who are the crazy ones, them or Ilya Bryzgalov?  Philadelphia went on to beat Edmonton, 4-3 in the shootout. Sadly, there was no stick throw from our man Bryz. He's unconventional, he'...

Bryzgalov tapped for Philadelphia reunion

He hasn’t exactly stunned the hockey world with his recent play, but Ilya Bryzgalov has managed to re-establish himself in Edmonton after two roller coaster years with Philadelphia. That’s been overshadowed by the Oilers’ overall struggles, but he’ll be the center of attention on Saturday as Edmonton has confirmed that he’ll start against the Flyers for the first time...

Flyers beat Bryzgalov and Oilers

Michael Raffl was getting ready to take his helmet off so he could get a better view of the Flyers’ impending shootout against the Oilers. And then he heard the coach call his name. The rookie winger had never taken part in an NHL shootout before. He’d never faced ex-Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. But coach Craig Berube called his name nonetheless, and as the final player to...

Edmonton Reunion: Flyers face Bryzgalov, Oilers

Ilya Bryzgalov will start in goal against Claude Giroux and the Flyers as they face the Edmonton Oilers. (Photo Courtesy of ESPN.com) The Philadelphia Flyers return to action after the Christmas break and in the process are starting a six-game road trip that will take them through Canada and the West Coast. The first of those six games is against an old foe. The Flyers are no stranger...

Flyers best Bryzgalov, Oilers in shootout

Michael Raffl scores Ilya Bryzgalov for the game-winning goal in the shootout of the Flyers 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers. (Photo Courtesy of ESPN.com) A rusty first period allowed Ilya Bryzgalov and the Edmonton Oilers to shine while the Philadelphia Flyers struggled. That was the benefit of playing the night before for Edmonton. But once the Flyers found their legs, they found...

How much could you buy with Bryzgalov's Flyers salary?

Kudos to Hockey Night in Canada for this bit of snark during their featured broadcast of the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers Saturday night. Ilya Bryzgalov's contract with the Flyers was big. Humangous big. But just how much are the Flyers picking up in their buyout of him? Lots. Lots of Barenaked Ladies downloads: Fantastic graphic on #HockeyNight of things you...

Why you heff to be mad? Raffl caps off Flyers shootout win against Bryzgalov, Oilers

Ilya Bryzgalov failed in the shootout yet again in his career, but this time it’s a good thing for the Philadelphia Flyers, as the Orange and Black grabbed two points in a 4-3 decision against the Edmonton Oilers on the road. Claude Giroux and Michael Raffl beat Bryzgalov in the shootout, while Wayne Simmonds recorded another multi-goal performance. The captain and Jakub Voracek...

Bryzgalov's new mask features drawings from his kids

Ilya Bryzgalov is abandoning the plain white mask he has been wearing during the 2013-14 season. Bryzgalov's new mask, seen above, has a terrific blue and orange color scheme and a couple of special drawings.  These drawings, one on each side, were reportedly created by Bryzgalov's children. One appears to depict Bryzgalov in net and the other highlights the Winter Olympic...

Ryan Smyth scores 2 goals; Oilers blank Flames 2-0

Ryan Smyth scored both goals and Devan Dubnyk made 27 saves Friday night to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-0 victory over the Calgary Flames. Smyth's fifth goal of the season, and first goal in 14 games, came at 17:22 of the first period and it came by way of a fortunate bounce. With Smyth stationed at the top of the goal crease, Ales Hemsky fired the puck from the corner...

Game 38 Preview: Philadelphia Flyers @ Edmonton Oilers

Philadelphia Flyers (17-16-4) @ Edmonton Oilers (13-24-3), 10:00pm, CSN-Philly/CBC Ilya Bryzgalov may have called it “just another game,” but you have to wonder if the Philadelphia Flyers will look at the contest in the same way. If it wasn’t for the acquisition of Bryzgalov the Flyers wouldn’t have Sean Couturier, Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, or Brayden Schenn and still...

Roman Horak welcomes fresh start with Edmonton Oilers after trade

Roman Horak wasn’t expecting to be traded from the Calgary Flames to the Edmonton Oilers organization. He wasn’t crushed by the move, either. Horak, the 22-year-old centre who went to the provincial rivals in the deal that brought defenceman Ladislav Smid to the Flames in mid-November, had fallen a couple of notches down the team’s depth chart and the trade, even though...

Edmonton Oilers shut out Calgary Flames

Edmonton Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins didn’t like the suggestion the Calgary Flames were a harder-working team. Despite some blowout losses this year, Eakins was adamant Friday morning his team can work just as hard and run through the slop when required. They then went out and proved it Friday night, grinding out a 2-0 win over the Flames. “It’s rare that we’ve...

Graph Dump: Bench Minors and Sean Monahan

A hockey team needs an identity. For the Edmonton Oilers of the past decade, there’s been one thing that they do better than all teams in the NHL: take bench minors. The picture’s no better if you confine yourself to the last five years. “Don’t mess with the Edmonton Oilers,” the pundits say. “They’ll get [...]

Flyers at Oilers Game Preview

Guess who’s back… PHILADELPHIA FLYERS (17-16-4) at EDMONTON OILERS (13-24-3) GOALIES Steve Mason (14-9-4, .923 save pct) vs Ilya Bryzgalov (2-4, .915 save pct) LAST MEETING Flyers beat Edmonton 4-2 on November 9th at the Wells Fargo Center behind goals from Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Vincent Lecavalier, and (somehow) Jay Rosehill.  Edmonton got goals from […]The post Flyers...
