Jonathan Bernier is making a strong case to be the top goaltender for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In his first four appearances with his new team, Bernier stopped 113 of the 116 shots he faced. Given the start against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night, Bernier allowed five goals but he made one spectacular save that helped the Maple Leafs secure a big 6-5 victory.  Though Edmonton breached Bernier for five goals, these are the types of saves which earn you playing time. James Reimer will see time for Toronto, but for now it's clear Bernier holds a slight edge in the goaltending battle.  (H/T Reddit Hockey) [follow]

Bernier gives Maple Leafs 'great confidence'

Look up the astrological sign Leo the Lion as in the one Jonathan Bernier features on his mask and you get the following. "Confident ... possess a kingdom they cherish and protect ... fully capable of being greatly successful on their own but much happier if they have an audience and a following who look up to them." Sounds bang on for Bernier at least for his first four...

Jonathan Bernier; The Toronto Maple Leafs Number One Goalie

By Tony Ambrogio (@SNTonyAmbrogio) Getty Images Jonathan Bernier is the Toronto Maple Leafs number one goalie; just don’t ask Coach Randy Carlyle about it. On Saturday, the Leafs goalie is expected to start for a third straight time, when the Leafs host the Edmonton Oilers.  If he does get the start, it would be the first time Bernier has done that in his career. “I trained...

Bernier continues to have the Preds’ number

The Nashville Predators hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs for just the fifth time in their history on Thursday. They also hosted goaltender Jonathan Bernier for the fourth time and, for the fourth time, he beat them. In front of 16,671 at Bridgestone Arena, the Leafs came away with a 4-0 victory. The score doesn’t suggest it but Pekka Rinne was outstanding. He collected 22 saves,...

Ten-Bell Bernier outshining James Reimer in Toronto

James Reimer is one of the most pleasant, good-natured players in hockey. But even he could have been forgiven for hanging his head after watching Jonathan Bernier dive across the crease to make an extraordinary glove save to keep the Toronto Maple Leafs in the game and lead them to a win that until that moment was slipping away and that they barely deserved. It hadn’t, in all...

The Hangover: Bernier stymies Preds yet again

The Toronto Maple Leafs were able to pull of a 4-0 victory over the Nashville Predators on the road thanks to goaltender Jonathan Bernier, who recorded his first shutout of the year stopping all thirty-six shots that he faced. With the win tonight, Bernier goes 8-1-0 in his career against Nashville. "I guess I feel pretty good playing against that team." 13:18 into...

Oilers-Maple Leafs Preview

Strong goaltending has played a key role in the Toronto Maple Leafs' fast start. The same can't be said about the Edmonton Oilers' situation between the pipes. The surging Maple Leafs try to get off to their best start in 20 years Saturday night when they host an Edmonton team looking to avoid its worst five-game start since 1995-96. Toronto (4-1-0) continued its solid...

The Good, The Bad, and the Predators Become Prey by   Bradshaw Furlong

It was another typical Toronto Maple Leafs win as they looked dead in the water for a large part of the second period after not recording a shot for over 14 minutes in the first period, but they found a way to score and give their team life as Jonathan Bernier kept the team in it the whole way [...]
