Claude Giroux was among 5 Philadelphia Flyers who needed surgery to repair various ailments. Giroux had both of his wrists operated on.

After much delay, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren finally addressed the Flyers’ injury situation. Some names on the list were surprises, some names not on the list were surprises. Here is the list of players who had injuries that required surgery.

Claude Giroux – Star Center Claude Giroux underwent surgeries on both of his wrists last week. The surgery on his right wrist was to repair torn cartilage. The surgery on his left wrist was to remove bone chips. Giroux missed no time with wrist injuries, and so it was surprising to see his name on the list.

James van Riemsdyk – JVR had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip. There had been rumors for a large portion of the season that van Riemsdyk was suffering from some kind of hip injury, clearly this could have been why he had such a rough year.

Wayne Simmonds – Wayne Simmonds had surgery to repair a broken index finger on his left hand.

Matt Carle – Matt Carle had a torn stomach muscle, and had surgery to repair that. Carle will be a free agent on July 1st, and is a player that the Flyers say they want to re-sign.

Kimmo Timonen – As the playoffs extended, it became clear that Timonen’s back was an issue. The injury that caused Timonen to sit out several games down the stretch, ending his iron man streak, clearly hindered the 37 year old defenseman. Timonen will undergo surgery to remove disk fragments from his lower back.

Names that were surprisingly missing from the list are Nicklas Grossmann who suffered a couple of different injuries down the stretch, including a concussion, and knee injuries. Some assumed that the knee may require surgery. Another player that some expected to be on this list was Danny Briere. Briere had an unimpressive regular season, but did score some key goals in the postseason.

All players are expected to be ready to go when the team reconvenes in September.
