The ice bucket challenge is sweeping the Internet, all for a good a cause, and one Boston Bruins forward is in on the act. Bruins center Gregory Campbell recently accepted the chilly challenge, which has gone viral in recent months. The challenge — which requires having a bucket of water and ice dumped on your head — is done to help raise awareness for certain causes. Campbell and the Bruins are doing so to raise awareness for ALS. According to the Bruins’ website, Campbell was challenged by a friend who is close to Pete Frates. A Beverley, Mass., native, Frates suffers from ALS, and his fight with the disease has been well-documented. “It just seemed like a great thing to bring awareness to ALS, and also to allow Pete — who I’m sure is suffering — and his family to know that there are a lot of people out there who care about him. He obviously has a lot of friends in the community.” Part of the deal is that someone who does the ice bucket challenge then has to challenge someone else. That’s where Bruins winger Brad Marchand comes in, as Campbell has laid down the gauntlet for the pesky forward to carry on the challenge. “I know Marchy and I always kind of battle on different levels, so I love calling him out on anything, to be honest with you,” Campbell told the team’s website. “I don’t know how far it’s going to go, but I know that obviously, the Bruins are a huge part of the community in and around Boston, and hopefully the awareness that this raises — just by getting it out on social media — will help tremendously with the cause.” Read more about Pete Frates and the Pete Frates #3 Fund by clicking here.Filed under: Boston Bruins, Top Stories
