Found June 04, 2013 on Nightmare on Helm Street:
The kids are all right. This was the first time since I can remember...there was not ONE mention of the Red Wings' age being a hindrance to their play-off performance.  I take that back...they were actually talking about the YOUTH of the organ-i-zation...when was the last time THAT happened? There's a lot of reasons to optimistic about this team's future.  The Free Agent market may be weak but we have a glutton of talented youth who will be looking to fill (and make) some spots in next season's roster.  Case in point - the Grand Rapids Griffins are just one game away from the Calder Cup Finals...top prize of the AHL. Read on, my friends... Game 6 is tonight at Van Andel Arena as the Griffs look to close the door on Jonathon Cheechoo and the Oklahoma City Barons.  The Griffs lead the series 3-2. Petr Mrazek has stopped the last 70 shots he's faced...backstopping the Griffs to back-to-back shutouts.  Leaning on the Special Teams, the Griffs ha...

Darren Helm needs offseason to heal

Detroit -- Now that the Red Wings are done, Darren Helm can afford to take his time to get completely healthy. Helm, who injured his back lifting weights before the lockout-shortened season started, was limited to one game, Jan. 25 against the Minnesota Wild. Wings general manager Ken Holland said Helm had seen four doctors and none of them found anything structurally wrong with...

Pavel Datsyuk plays goalie with friends in pickup hockey game

Detroit Red Wings superstar Pavel Datsyuk is known for dangling goaltenders, but not for playing between the pipes.  During a pickup hockey game with some of his friends (probably his teammates), Datsyuk strapped on the pads and gave playing goalie a whirl.  No word on how it went, but unless Datsyuk has played goalie before, I’m guessing he got lit up. [@Datsyuk13]

Franzen is here to stay ... for now

Next season, Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen will be in season No. 5 of an 11-year, 43.5 million deal. He will be paid 5 million a season through 2015-16. His 2016-17 salary will be 3.5 million. He will then make 2 million the following season and 1 million in each of the final two seasons of the deal, which ends in 2020. The Red Wings have already handed over 21 million...

A little late but worth a listen: Red Wings GM Ken Holland ‘recaps’ 2013 season on Huge Show

This interview was posted a wee bit late, and it's a classic, "GM speaking from car, on phone, occasionally ear-dialing" interview, but this past Friday, Ken Holland spoke to WBBL's Huge Show's Bill Simonson, and he offered both reflections upon the regular season and playoff run that was, as well as the shape of the roster to come--stating that the Wings fully...

Red Wings evening gnus: on Brunner, Gustavsson and Franzen

Very briefly given that I'm assuming most of you are watching the Bruins-Penguins game or still arguing about Franzen: If you want updates regarding tonight's Grand Rapids Griffins-Oklahoma City Barons game, both the Red Wings' Twitter account and the Griffins' Game Day account are providing updates, and if you are an old fogey like me, you can always hit "...

Red Wings overnight report: on free agent forwards, Holland’s trip to Toronto and Babcock on WJR

In theory, this exhausted blogger (still, go figure) has a light morning. The Detroit Free Press (via photos) and Michigan Hockey (text, video, photos) looked back at the top moments of the Red Wings' 2013 season, USA Today posited a list of the top unrestricted free agents-to-be, and Valtteri Filppula's picture includes a ridiculously astute comment from Matt Kartozian...

Red Wings mid-day news: On Griffins facing Game 7, Helm, the draft and UFA strategies

After a spirited discussion of Johan Franzen's worth or the lack thereof in the overnight report's comments section, here are a few more tidbits to chew upon as Michigan Hockey and the rest of us start fingernail-chewing (well, maybe you...I just clip mine) in anticipation of Game 7 between the Grand Rapids Griffins and Oklahoma City Barons tonight (7 PM EDT at Van Andel...

Red Wings officially assign Danny DeKeyser to Grand Rapids

Per the Grand Rapids Griffins' PR department, the Red Wings have officially assigned Danny DeKeyser to the Griffins, which probably means that he's healthy enough to play for them as his broken right thumb has healed: DANNY DeKEYSER JOINS GRIFFINS GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Detroit Red Wings on Monday assigned defenseman Danny DeKeyser (de-KAI-zuhr) to the Grand...

The Detroit Sports Show: Red Wings’ 2013 Season Wrap-Up

With the Detroit Red Wings’ 2013 season coming to a difficult end in a Game 7 overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks, the latest episode of The Detroit Sports Show podcast will take a look back at the Wings’ playoff run. We’ll also take a look-ahead to the 2014 season and free agency — specifically, how much did the play of the Wings’ young guys late this year dictate...

Players We Need to Keep and Let Go

Now that the offseason is here, let’s take a look at whose contract is up and who needs to be bought out. This will be an interesting summer, to say the least. We’ve got a superstar to keep, the cap is going down, a bunch of UFAs, RFAs and some possible buyouts. The UFA market seems poor right now, but a few compliance buyouts would liven things right up. More after the jump...

Red Wings overnight report: on Swedes in GR, Datsyuk, Filppula, cap recapturing and rule changes

I've seen this happen, and it isn't pretty, but it's done without much fanfare: Certainly not what anyone around Hockeytown wants to see. twitter.com/Bill_Roose/sta… — The Wheel Deal (@Bill_Roose) June 4, 2013 Al & Dave make a mess. Red Wings afternoon news: on Andersson bolstering GR’s playoff run, Bickell, Helm and Tweets of note

Amongst this afternoon's Red Wings-related news stories: First, foremost and for the record, the Detroit Free Press's readers named Fox Sports Detroit's Ken Daniels Michigan's best sports broadcaster, and I think MLive's readers got it right in naming Jimmy Howard the Wings' MVP (hell, even Lambert praised Howard today);   Second, the Grand Rapids...

5 Terribly Awesome Hockey Cards

Baseball cards have long held the mantle for having some of the most awesomely terrible trading cards. But after a quick search it became obvious that hockey has had its share too. Here are some of my favorite terribly awesome hockey cards: Leather Jacket? Check. White washed jeans? Check. One leg against the wall? Check. Do I look cool? Yes, the Uncle Jessie look has never been...

Mule is Staying Put

Obviously - this isn't the kind of thing I'd like to be writing about here in the early parts of June.  But at least the Red Wings gave us great hockey almost all the way through May. ...Yeah I know it wasn't ALWAYS great hockey.  But at least we have a team that you can actually be proud of.  Tell you what...we'll come back to that. The point of this post...
