from Michael Zuidema of the Grand Rapids Press, Gustav Nyquist’s family got a nice surprise when they arrived at Grand Rapids Griffins practice on Thursday afternoon at Van Andel Arena. The rookie forward had just been recalled by the parent club Detroit Red Wings. He’ll join the team in Chicago for Friday night’s game and should fill in for Darren Helm, who is nursing a groin injury. “It was fun news. They just got in,” Nyquist said. “It’s funny, they just drove in from Chicago. They were there for a couple days and now I’m heading there again so they might have to drive back to catch the game.” Nyquist leads the Griffins and ranks second in the American Hockey League among rookies with 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) in 30 games. continued

Michigan Stadium, Red Wings Should Host Next NHL Winter Classic

How has “Hockeytown U.S.A.” never hosted a NHL Winter Classic? The Detroit Red Wings are one of the game’s most legendary brands and franchises. With the exception of the Montreal Canadiens, no team has a richer history and more iconic logo on their sweater. Of course, Montreal hasn’t hosted the game either, but first things first. The Wings have the perfect venue with a...

Red Wings-Hawks quick take: Imaginary hooks, puck-chasing Wings and whiffing Jimmy

The Detroit Red Wings fell into bad habits and found themselves paying for earned breaks on Friday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Chicago…And the Wings’ lack of discipline came to bite ‘em in the ass, repeatedly, but the Wings didn’t seem to be willing or able to learn from their mistakes, nor curry favor with the referees. Don’t get me wrong—the Wings were terribly, terribly...

Nicklas Lidstrom leads Red Wings by example -- again

For a while in the second period of Tuesday's 3-2 victory over St. Louis, the Red Wings looked lost. Goaltender Jimmy Howard misplayed the puck and passed it to the Blues -- twice -- while the Wings were on the power play.

Finally We Get To It: Wings at Hawks Preview

Weird scheduling quirk, as this will be the first time the Hawks and Wings square off this season. And now they'll do that three times in the next seven games. That's brilliant stuff right there. No matter how much we hate to admit it, everything the Hawks do is pretty much still measured against Detroit. You'd think a Cup on top of the division title two years ago would...
