DETROIT - JUNE 12: Henrik Zetterberg #40 of the Detroit Red Wings warms up before playing against the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game Seven of the 2009 NHL Stanley Cup Finals at Joe Louis Arena on June 12, 2009 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images)
You could very well be looking at the next Hart Trophy winner here folks. I get a weird feeling when I think about a member of the Detroit Red Wings winning any kind of personal hardware. Unless it's Pavel Datsyuk winning the Selke. For some reason that just feels right. However in this shortened season, I don't think any other player has been more important to his team then Henrik Zetterberg has been. Hit the jump because you're pretty. Z has stepped into the impossibly too large to fill skates of Nicklas Lidstrom and Steve Yzerman, and filled them admirably thus far. It's usually lack of scoring prowess that prevents Detroit's vaunted forwards from taking home trophies, but so far Zetterberg has been filling the stat sheet with Don't-Stop-Belevin'-Getting-Overplayed-at-your-favorite-local-college-bar-type frequency. I've watched at least two or three games from every team so far this year, and no one has put his team on his back like Zetterberg has. People can make arguments for the Sidney Crobys and Steven Stamkos-es-es of the world, but I feel like I have plenty of ground to stand on when I say "Zetterberg for MVP" at this point. When the Wings have needed goals, he's provided.  When they've needed assists, he's abliged. When they've needed a big play, it's been off of Zetterberg's stick, and when they've needed a pick-me-up shift it's been from his legs. He might not finish within the top-five in the NHL's scoring race, but if Zetterberg continues to play and inspire this way, he could very well win the Hart. Follow Franklin Steele on Twitter.
