NEWARK -- It has been quite the rookie season for the New Jersey’s Adam Henrique, culminating in a chance to win the Stanley Cup.Henrique has quickly made himself known in the playoffs scoring two series-winning goals for the Devils. In the first round he scored the winning goal in overtime of Game 7 against the Florida Panthers; in the Eastern Conference Finals, he scored 1:03 into overtime against the New York Rangers to claim the series in Game 6. All of this comes on the heels of a strong regular season in which Henrique had 16 goals and 51 points in 74 games, earning a nomination for the Calder Trophy in the process. The rookie attributes his quick maturation to the players he has had around him and the organization treating him right since Day 1. “When I first came in everybody treated me very well,” Henrique told reporters. “The staff helped me go out tremendously and all the players in the room have been great to me throughout the whole year. There is a big reason why my year went so well, and playing with Zach [Parise] and [Ilya Kovalchuk] and learning from guys like that definitely helps out as a young guy. It takes the pressure off me and I just go out there and play.” Henrique has enjoyed his rookie campaign, saying it’s been his goal to play in the NHL since the first time he put skates on.“Every kid wants to play in the NHL. Every kid dreams of scoring those big goals and playing in the Stanley Cup Final, winning games,” Henrique said. “I think not a lot of people expected me to be at the point where I am,” he added. “I’ve always been confident in my game. I’ve always seen myself playing here and being a part of this team and being a big part of this team contributing any way I can.” Indeed Henrique, a third-round pick in 2008, has made his mark on the Devils in a very big way. He has tallied 11 points and a plus-9 rating thus far in the playoffs. His contributions have helped New Jersey get back to the Cup Final, and they will be needed once again here against the Kings. “This is the biggest prize in the world,” Henrique said, referring to the Stanley Cup. “We’re here now and we got to stay focused and keep playing hard and keep moving forward. At the same time it’s important to enjoy it.” Photo credit: Getty Images
