Earlier today it was announced that Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson would be suspended for 2 games following a hit on Buffalo Sabres Jason Pominville that gave him both a concussion and a cut above his eye that needed 7-8 stitches. I stated earlier that I agree on the suspension because Hjalmarsson does deserve one, but after hearing about the ruling handed down to James Wisniewski this suspension is nothing but a mere joke. Wisniewski was given a 2 game suspension for making an “adult gesture” towards another player in a game. Hjalmarsson was given a 2 game suspension for a hit that could have done a lot more damage than it did. (and he’s lucky it didn’t because that looked like a hit that could have caused brain damage or something else pretty easily) So the NHL feels like an illegal and downright nasty hit deserves the same punishment as making a gesture to a player?
