(Photo by: Mark J. Terril/AP Photo) Since being drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 2006, Jonathan Bernier has found himself as a backup to Jonathan Quick. Bernier is a very capable goaltender and could start in at least five other NHL cities. He knows that because earlier this season, he asked for trade from Los Angeles knowing he wouldn't be making any progress in the Kings' organization with Quick still on the team. This season, Bernier has taken advantage of the limited opportunities he has had this season in net. When Quick is struggling, head coach Darryl Sutter will look to Bernier to turn the team around. The Quebec native has lost only one game in five starts and given up just over a goal a game, which is quite the accomplishment for a backup goaltender. Bernier and Quick are similar. Both are 5'11, have great movement and will challenge shooters. However, Bernier plays a more "safe" game by not getting so low to the ice that the upper half of the net is open. Bernier attempts to play bigger than he really is, as opposed to Quick. The biggest issue with Bernier's game is rebound control. Bernier will give up a lot of rebounds, possibly more than Roberto Luongo of the Vancouver Canucks. A player crashing the net after a shot will often have a second chance at the puck to score. Also, his angles along post has not been on point as of late. Opponents have been able to find holes and openings along the post to score from. It is something to watch for. Here is how to beat Jonathan Bernier: Rebounds: As said earlier, Bernier has a rebound control problem. With players crashing the net and standing in front, it is almost a certainty a player will get a second opportunity to score. Bernier isn't an A+ goalie along the posts. He leaves holes that any shooter can find. The angles aren't spectacular either. Look for players to force plays from the outside or from the corner coming in on net.
