Hockey is a religion, and much like religion, hockey is inherited through generations. Your favorite NHL team for instance, is generally the one that’s geographically closest to where you are born. This is the team you grow up with. This is the team whose joys and sorrows are communal for your hometown.
This is the team that you fancy yourself with for the rest of your life. For me, this team has always been the Tampa Bay Lightning. For my father, it wasn’t always the Lightning...He had to convert.
Fans convert to new teams for different reasons.
Sometimes you have to move, or even worse your team has to move, and we all know long distance relationships suck. Sometimes you just find yourself having feelings for a new, more exciting team. Whatever the case may be, the conversion will be challenging. No one wants to convert in anything.
