Jeff Skinner scored two goals, Cam Ward made 36 saves in his 199th NHL win, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on Saturday night. Skinner gave Carolina a 3-2 lead when he skated around the net and scored from a tough angle at 6:37 of the third period. Chad LaRose added an empty-net goal. Ward stopped all 18 shots he faced in the second period. He made two strong saves on NHL goals leader Steven Stamkos, including a spinning shot by the center from the low left circle. Jaroslav Spacek also scored and Jussi Jokinen had two assists for the Hurricanes. The Lightning, who started a seven-game homestand, got goals from Ryan Malone and Nate Thompson. Tampa Bay dropped five points behind eighth-place Washington in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Skinner scores 2, Hurricanes top Lightning

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Jeff Skinner scored two goals, Cam Ward made 36 saves in his 199th NHL win, and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on Saturday night. Kirk Muller, Jaroslav Spacek & Jamie McBain

If you have been keeping up with the scoring chance recaps, one thing you will notice is that Jamie McBain & Jaroslav Spacek have been the team's "highest rated" defensemen in about six of the last seven games. These two are also leading the defense corps in terms of possession metrics and are currently the only defensemen on the team with scoring chance percentages...

Lightning open homestand with loss to 'Canes

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Tampa Bay Lightning 3/10/12 Scoring Chances

A couple of weeks ago I said this: "Despite having only two goals, Skinner actually had a great month and the chances were going heavily in Carolina's favor when he was on the ice. Same goes for Jokinen only on a lesser scale. The reason for Skinner not scoring enough despite driving play in the right direction is mostly due to bad luck. Skinner had 35 shots on goal...

Ward, Hurricanes blanked by Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- Jose Theodore made 34 saves for his third shutout of the season and the Florida Panthers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 2-0 on Sunday to maintain the Southwest Division lead. Tomas Fleischmann scored in the second period, and Marcel Goc added an empty-net goal. The Panthers, a point ahead of Washington in the division race, won for the second time in their past...

Jaroslav Spacek Has Interest in the Boston Bruins

Jaroslav Spacek, currently a defenceman playing for the Carolina Hurricanes, could find himself in the black and gold of the Boston Bruins next season. According to Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe, the Bruins took a strong run at acquiring the 38-year-old from the Hurricanes prior to the NHL’s trade deadline, but Carolina’s asking price was too high. But that’s not the...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals 3/6/12

Tuesday night's 4-3 overtime win over the Washington Capitals goes down as one of the most exciting Carolina games I have seen this year. With 85 combined shots and 44 scoring chances between both teams, you would expect an exciting contest. However, "exciting" and "good hockey" are not synonymous and this certainly was a sloppy played game by both teams....

Watch Those Line Changes

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, GMs may also talk about on-the-fly line changes, as in the fact some teams are taking advantage of them, making them long changes. Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford believes it’s somewhat out of control how players are jumping on the ice in transition way before they should be and it’s thwarting the offensive rush. “You’ve got five guys that...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Buffalo Sabres 3/7/12 Scoring Chances

Carolina's game against the Sabres on Wednesday ended on a sour, familiar note as they dropped yet another game in overtime. How poor their performance in OT games this year is one story but that isn't the main reason why they lost this game. Penalties were. You know it, I know it, anyone who watched the game or looked at the box score knows it. It doesn't matter how...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Florida Panthers 3/11/12 Scoring Chances

One very small positive thing about this season for the Hurricanes is that they have avoided the embarrassment of being shutout for the most part. Tonight's 2-0 loss to the Florida Panthers was only the third time that the Canes have been shutout this season as Jose Theodore stopped all 34 shots thrown his way. Some might say that this was a "strong effort" by the Hurricanes...

Hurricanes Weekly Report 3/5-3/11

The Hurricanes managed to pick up three points in four games this past week when you consider how badly they were outplayed in all four games. They were outshot in all but one game (which was the one they lost, oddly enough), controlled only 41% of the even strength corsi events and 36% of the shots on goal which shows that they were struggling to control play and had a few bounces...
