Joe Corvo's power-play goal with 11:52 to play gave the Hurricanes a 3-2 lead and Ray Whitney added a late score for a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Thrashers for Carolina's first preseason win. Corvo's goal came after Maxim Afingoenov's power-play goal with 13:26 left pulled the Thrashers into a 2-2 tie. Corvo scored on a 5-on-3, with assists from Ray Whitney and Eric Staal, and Erik Cole then set up Whitney for a goal with 3:37 to play. Scott Walker's goal at 9:52 of the first period and Eric Staal's power-play score early in the second have given the Canes a 2-1 lead over Atlanta after two periods. The Canes outshot the Thrashers 15-1 in the first period as goaltender Cam Ward had little to do but watch. Walker scored on the rebound of an Eric Staal shot for a 1-0 lead.
