The Carolina Hurricanes have activated goalie Dan Ellis from injured reserve. The team announced the move Monday, a few hours before its game at Montreal. Ellis had been out since suffering a cut near his left knee in the final minute of a loss to New Jersey on March 21. He was brought in during the offseason to back up Cam Ward, an All-Star who will be out at least two more weeks with a sprained left knee. Ellis was 4-5 with a goals-against average of 2.65 when he was hurt. The team also sent John Muse to its AHL affiliate in Charlotte. He did not play in three games as the backup to Justin Peters.

Hurricanes' Pitkanen suffers scary injury

RALEIGH, N.C. Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen left Tuesday nights game against the Washington Capitals on a stretcher after suffering an injury when he crashed into the boards late in the second period. The Hurricanes were calling it a lower body injury well after the Capitals left PNC Arena with a 5-3 victory, and video replay suggests it could be pretty bad. Carolina...

Report: Carolina Defenseman Jamie McBain’s Name Coming Up in Trade Market

There’s a surprising name who has reportedly surfaced on the NHL trade market, and teams looking for help on the blue line are probably pretty interested. TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Monday via Twitter that Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jamie McBain is starting to come up in trade discussions. Nothing appears imminent at this point, but according to Dreger, the Canes are open...

Carolina Hurricanes’ Joni Pitkanen stretchered off ice following crash on icing race

Things have been going horribly for the Carolina Hurricanes lately and this injury to Joni Pitkanen is just going to add to their problems.  They are 2-7-1 in their last 10 games and are currently 10th in the Eastern Conference.  Pitkanen was racing with Washington Capitals forward Troy Brouwer for the puck when Pitkanen went into boards awkwardly.  It doesn’t look like Brouwer...

Hurricanes’ Joni Pitkanen Stretchered Off Ice After Crashing Into Boards

Image via USA Today Joni Pitkanen suffered a season-ending ankle injury after crashing hard into the boards on an icing call. The Carolina Hurricanes defenseman was rushing to beat Troy Brouwer to the puck, but ended up going feet-first into the boards and severely injuring his ankle. He eventually had to be stretchered off the ice and TSN’s Darren Dreger has reported that he...

Caps rally negates Tlusty hat trick

Carolina's Jiri Tlusty scored three goals early. The Washington Capitals scored even more late. Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist, and the Capitals rallied to beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 Tuesday night despite giving up a hat trick to Tlusty. Mike Green scored two goals, Joel Ward added a goal, Nicklas Backstrom matched a career high with four assists and Braden...

Lightning acquire Adam Hall from Hurricanes

The Tampa Bay Lightning gained forward Adam Hall and a seventh-round pick this year from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron, the team announced Tuesday. The move represents a return trip to Tampa Bay for Hall, who was claimed on waivers by the Hurricanes on March 16 after the Lightning placed him on the wire a day earlier. He has played 20 games...

Joni Pitkanen injured, debate over hybrid icing resumes

One of the biggest debates in hockey has to do with the league adopting hybrid icing. While the topic has been placed on the back burner for an undisclosed period of time, a play that occurred Tuesday night may have put it back front and center. During Tuesday night’s game with the Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen was charging back into his defensive zone...

Canes trade with Bolts for Bergeron

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward Adam Hall and a draft pick. The Hurricanes announced the deal Tuesday, a few hours before their game against Washington. The 32-year-old Bergeron is a 10-year veteran who gives Carolina's defensive corps some depth at both ends of the ice. He led the Lightning...

Trade Deadline Roadblocks

We are only one day away from the trade deadline and every Hurricanes fan is wondering why GM Jim Rutherford has yet to make any moves. It seems pretty confusing at first glance because the Canes are currently in the middle of a playoff race and have been playing some of their worst hockey of the season. Since Rutherford has yet to make any deal at all, some fans have gotten the...

Can Marc-Andre Bergeron Help the Hurricanes?

The Hurricanes trade for a "veteran defenseman" finally happened, only the player they acquired was someone nobody expected. Instead of getting a "gritty veteran defenseman" like many thought, Rutherford added some help to the powerplay by acquiring Marc-Andre Bergeron from the Tampa Bay Lightning. All the Canes gave up to acquire him was a 7th round pick and...

Time for the NHL to go to the hybrid icing like the NCAA

Time for the NHL to reconsider their stance on the touch up icing. This could be prevented if the NHL adopts the Hybrid Icing, like the NCAA currently has. I think it's a no-brainier. Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen hits leg first into the end boards racing for the puck, Pitkanen is then taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Matt Karash: Canes trade deadline direction?

A couple weeks ago, I would have said that the Canes trade deadline direction would have been reasonably predictable. Nothing huge was going to happen - that happened last summer with the Jordan Staal and Alexander Semin additions. With Ruutu on the way back, the possibilities at forward were many even if nothing past the 1st line was clicking yet. And despite being a bit offense...

Capitals-Hurricanes Preview

The Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes are trying to close the gap in the Eastern Conference playoff race. A meeting in Raleigh might indicate the advantage goes to the visitor. The Capitals attempt to win for the sixth time in eight visits to PNC Arena on Tuesday night while the Hurricanes try to snap a four-game slide at home. Washington (16-17-2) and Carolina (16-16...
