via Chip Alexander of the News & Observer, “We had our initial conversation last night,” Rutherford said. “Basically it was, ‘We made the trade, we know everybody is happy, now we need to start talking long-term.’ That being agreed on, now the work begins.”
Jordan Staal has one year remaining on a contract he had with the Pens that will pay him a $4.5 million salary next season. He’s due to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2012-2013 season.
Staal last week turned down a 10-year contract extension offered by the Pens that would have paid him a reported $60 million. Rutherford did not say what contract parameters – length and salary – the Canes or Staal might be interested in negotiating.
Krepelka said his policy was not to discuss contract negotiations, saying via email, “Jordan is excited about the opportunity that lies ahead of him in Carolina.”

Matt Karash: Jordan Staal trade - Part 2: Jordan Staal expectations
In my blog yesterday, I took a dive in "Jim Rutherford building a winner" history of successfully building winners out of spare parts and the downside of it - the inconsistency that sees the Canes only making the playoffs every third year or so. I voted yes on the trade at a very simple level. The Canes needed to add more true top-end talent. They got a chance to do...

Matt Karash: Jordan Staal trade - Part 3: Canes math and filling out the roster
First, imagine for a moment that the Canes could spend to the salary cap. WE WOULD BE LOOKING AT ADDING 2-3 more high-end players and trying to decide whether we should bid higher on Parise or Suter. But back to reality, GM Jim Rutherford probably has $3-5M left to spend. I think he has 2 spots to fill â 3rd line center and top 1st or 2nd pairing defenseman.
The Jordan...

Matt Karash: Jordan Staal trade - After time to digest (Part 1: Canes team context)
So with the rest of the draft weekend going down pretty quietly and Roberto Luongo and Rick Nash staying put (for now), the Canes aggressive move to land Jordan Staal clearly goes down as the blockbuster of the draft.
I am on record from shortly after the trade as generally liking the deal. You can check out the details if you wish.
So after a couple days of let it sink it...
Breaking down the Staal trade in detail
Any time a trade goes down, people always want to know who won the trade. It's an impossible question to answer when the smoke is still clearing. It'll take years to see who "won" the trade.
But the question that can be answered right now is, was this a good trade for the Penguins? The answer is clearly YES.
Jordan Staal spent six years here and...
Carolina Hurricanes Scoring Chances by Defense Pairings
Unlike the forward lines, the Hurricanes did less juggling with their defense pairings and had a few units that stayed together for most of the season. Injuries to Jay Harrison and Joni Pitkanen caused some of the pairings to be switched around but for the most part, the Hurricanes kept their defense pairings the same for portions of the year. Tim Gleason & Bryan Allen handled...

Unqualified free agents, are they worth a shot?
A week ago, I talked about what players the Carolina Hurricanes had to qualify to retain their rights and they qualified just about everyone who had a realistic shot of being in the NHL next season. The only players who were not qualified were Cedric McNicoll, Kyle Lawson and Matthew Pistilli, who were in the ECHL for most of last season. The Hurricanes may have held onto all of...
Matt Karash: Moving away from Jordan Staal trade: Part 4: Free agent/summer roster plan
So there is some debate on exactly how much Canes GM Jim Rutherford has to spend and how what level of player the Canes will be shopping for in a couple days.
In the "spend more and get another high-end player or 2" corner is Rutherford's recent comments about adding a forward and a veteran defenseman. He has not named names obviously nor has he clearly stated what...
