After watching backup goaltender Jhonas Enroth fail to stop the previously winless Carolina Hurricanes, the Buffalo Sabres are hoping Ryan Miller has some better luck.
Miller will seek to continue his strong start when the Sabres wrap up their home-and-home series with the Hurricanes on Friday night in Buffalo.
Enroth was charged with five goals in his first start this season, a 6-3 loss Thursday that was Buffalo's first defeat of 2012-13. He gave up four of those in the second period. Jason Pominville's second score of the game got the Sabres to within a goal before Eric Staal completed his 13th career hat trick.
"I think we gave up the puck too much,'' said Pominville, whose team was denied its first 3-0-0 start since 2008-09. "We battled back a couple of times (but) we gave up too many rush opportunities and were a little too casual with the puck. It just wasn't our usual game."
Staal's first points of 2012-13 helped Carolina (1-2-0) avoid dropping its first three games for the second straight season. Jeff Skinner also scored twice for the Hurricanes, who had been outscored 9-2 in their first two games.
"(We've) got to be tougher, I think, around their net and today we beared down a little bit more," said Skinner, whose team is among the league leaders with 38.7 shots per game. "You stick with it. You keep putting that many pucks on the net, you're going to get a bounce here or there, and one's going to go in for you."
Carolina would appear to have a more difficult task building on that first win as Miller is expected to be in the Buffalo net Friday. The former Vezina Trophy winner has allowed three goals on 64 shots in his first two games and gave up two in his most recent matchup with the Hurricanes, a 3-2 overtime win at home March 7.
Miller is 7-4-0 with a 1.94 goals-against average in his last 11 home games against Carolina.
The Sabres have alternated wins and losses in their last six contests against the Hurricanes and have split the past six home matchups. Pominville scored the winning goal in the overtime victory in March.
The Sabres winger, who has seven points in the first three games, has a four-game goal scoring streak against the Hurricanes and has assisted on two others over that span. Thomas Vanek, owner of a team-best eight points, had five last season versus Carolina to tie Pominville for the team lead.
The Hurricanes could turn to Dan Ellis to slow down those two Sabres. Ellis turned away 12 of 13 shots in relief of Cam Ward in Saturday's season opener and his Hurricanes debut, a 5-1 loss in Florida. He has faced Buffalo only once, allowing three goals on 14 shots as a substitute in an 8-4 road loss for Nashville on Feb. 27, 2008.
If he starts, Ellis will try to get some help from Staal, who has nine goals and eight assists in his last 16 matchups. His brother, Jordan Staal, has three goals and four assists during a six-game point streak against Buffalo.

Ever since Milan Lucic beat Ryan Miller out for a loose puck, the Buffalo Sabres and their fanbase have been crying out for more toughness, for more accountability. Apparently they realized that Patrick Kaleta is softer than a pool of Charmain Ultra. So what do they do? They hire that dude from the band Saliva and Brave Steve Ott. The idea was that those two would keep the...
The Buffalo Sabres have put up some mind-boggling merchandise numbers just one week into the 2013 season. According to the team's official site, the Sabres have sold more merchandise in the first week of the current season than they did during the entire 2010-11 season.
The team's "Fan Appreciation Sale", which ran over the course of training camp before ending...
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- With Ryan Miller standing tall at the other end, the Carolina Hurricanes regrouped late and focused on getting pucks to the net with traffic in front. It worked to perfection. Jay Harrison broke a 1-1 deadlock with just under 5 minutes remaining, and the Carolina Hurricanes went on to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 at the First Niagara Center on Friday night....

With every team having to deal with a shortened training camp, there are bound to be a lot of roster and lineup changes throughout these first few weeks. Carolina's head coach, Kirk Muller made a few adjustments to the lineup before Tuesday nights game by subbing Jeremy Welsh and Kevin...
The Buffalo Sabres are hoping a solid start by goalie Ryan Miller is a sign of good things to come.
That's not so good for the Carolina Hurricanes, who have struggled to score coming out of the nine-month layoff.
The visiting Sabres seek their best start in four seasons and look to hand the Hurricanes their worst in 15 years Thursday night in the opener of a home-and-home series...
Thomas Vanek is the first player in Sabres history to record eight points in the first three games of the season.
Five players have had seven in the first three games: Gilbert Perreault (1972-72 and 1979-80), Don Luce (1975-76), Danny Gare (1979-80), Bob Sweeney (1992-93) and Pat LaFontaine (1992-93). (Source: Elias Sports Bureau).

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Once Eric Staal and the Carolina Hurricanes got in a good offensive flow, they settled in to do what they do best. Staal's hat trick capped an offensive outburst for the Hurricanes in a 6-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night at PNC Arena. "It felt a little better," Staal said. "I knew if I stayed with the game plan and we stayed...
The Buffalo Sabres lost 6-3 to the Carolina Hurricanes. A pathetic defensive efford by all 12 forwards and 6 D. The discipline that the team showed in wins vs. Philly and Toronto was flushed down the drain.
Jhonas Enroth now 0-9-3 in his last 12 decisions. He gave up career high four goals in the second period.
Tyler Myers, Robyn Regehr and the Sabres D corps didn't...
The good thing is Buffaloâs top line is scoring all the goals right now. The bad thing is Buffaloâs top line is scoring all the goals right now.
Call it a blessing, and, a curse.
Hodgson (3), Pominville (3) and Vanek (2) have scored 80% of the goals for the Sabres. The 26-19-29 trio has potted eight of the Sabres 10 goals in the first three games.

Calling any game a "must win" situation is silly when it's only three games into the season but tonight was a game that Carolina really needed to win for their fan's sake. After starting the season with two blowout losses, scoring a grand total of two goals in the process, they really needed to play a good game tonight to at least lift the spirits of the fanbase...
Jay Harrison scored the go-ahead goal with 4:50 left, helping the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.
Harrison fired a slap shot from the right point after Eric Staal won the faceoff, and the puck beat Buffalo's Ryan Miller on the short side.
Alexander Semin tied it for the Hurricanes early in the third period, and Jeff Skinner scored an...
Tonight the Carolina Hurricanes will take a third try at putting together a hockey game that does not look like a preseason game filled with mistakes that either get worked out or sent to the AHL before real games start. The Canes face a Buffalo team that is on the other side of the "who knows what we will get out of the gate" ledger with a 2-0 record.
Right now there...
Don't look now but the Hurricanes have outchanced their opponents in each of their first three games this year and they managed to do it last night without the "aid" of score effects, as they were playing with the score tied or with a lead for most of the contest. Yesterday's game was easily Carolina's most impressive performance in this still very young season...
For the second game in a row, the Hurricanes outchanced their opponents only to come out on the losing end of a blowout. Despite outchancing both Florida and Tampa Bay by a combined 40-34 and 32-23 at even strength, the Canes have been outscored 2-9 and now find themselves starting the year with an 0-2-0 record. This is frustrating to watch, but the fact that Carolina has been winning...
On a busy Thursday, Eric Staal’s hat trick put the Carolina Hurricanes into the win column for the first time this season as they beat the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 last night in Raleigh. He scored once in the second and put up both Carolina goals in the third. His brother, Jordan, added a pair of assists in the win. Jason Pominville potted a pair in the loss.
That was part of a wild...
