RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Carolina Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller says he will experiment this preseason with putting brothers Jordan and Eric Staal on the ice together. Muller said Wednesday during the team's rookie conditioning camp that he wants to give the Staals a chance to play on the same line "and see if there's chemistry." The team's top priority this offseason was finding an elite forward to complement Eric Staal. Carolina acquired Jordan Staal from Pittsburgh during last week's draft in exchange for center Brandon Sutter, prospect Ryan Dumoulin and a first-round pick. Both Staals are centers, but after the trade, the possibility was raised that one could shift to the wing. Muller says "it makes sense right now to start off with them and see how they work together."

Hurricanes, Jordan Staal Begin Conract Negotiations

via Chip Alexander of the News & Observer, “We had our initial conversation last night,” Rutherford said. “Basically it was, ‘We made the trade, we know everybody is happy, now we need to start talking long-term.’ That being agreed on, now the work begins.” Jordan Staal has one year remaining on a contract he had with the Pens that will pay him a $4.5 million salary...

Boucher to miss 4-6 months with shoulder injury

Carolina Hurricanes backup goalie Brian Boucher is expected to miss 4-6 months with an unspecified shoulder injury. General manager Jim Rutherford said Thursday that Boucher was injured within the past week and is scheduled to have surgery to repair it. He did not say which shoulder was injured. The 35-year-old Boucher is entering the second year of a two-year, $1.9 million contract...

Matt Karash: Jordan Staal trade - Part 2: Jordan Staal expectations

In my blog yesterday, I took a dive in "Jim Rutherford building a winner" history of successfully building winners out of spare parts and the downside of it - the inconsistency that sees the Canes only making the playoffs every third year or so. I voted yes on the trade at a very simple level. The Canes needed to add more true top-end talent. They got a chance to do...

Matt Karash: Jordan Staal trade - Part 3: Canes math and filling out the roster

First, imagine for a moment that the Canes could spend to the salary cap. WE WOULD BE LOOKING AT ADDING 2-3 more high-end players and trying to decide whether we should bid higher on Parise or Suter. But back to reality, GM Jim Rutherford probably has $3-5M left to spend. I think he has 2 spots to fill – 3rd line center and top 1st or 2nd pairing defenseman. The Jordan...

Finding a replacement for Justin Peters

One of the Carolina Hurricanes' unrestricted free agents who hasn't been talked about much is goaltender Justin Peters. You may remember him as the guy who was Cam Ward's back-up in 2010-11 and was a complete sieve whenever he was forced into action, which was only in 12 games. However, you may also remember him from last season when he posted a .931 save percentage in...

Matt Karash: Moving away from Jordan Staal trade: Part 4: Free agent/summer roster plan

So there is some debate on exactly how much Canes GM Jim Rutherford has to spend and how what level of player the Canes will be shopping for in a couple days. In the "spend more and get another high-end player or 2" corner is Rutherford's recent comments about adding a forward and a veteran defenseman. He has not named names obviously nor has he clearly stated what...

Carolina Hurricanes Scoring Chances by Defense Pairings

Unlike the forward lines, the Hurricanes did less juggling with their defense pairings and had a few units that stayed together for most of the season. Injuries to Jay Harrison and Joni Pitkanen caused some of the pairings to be switched around but for the most part, the Hurricanes kept their defense pairings the same for portions of the year. Tim Gleason & Bryan Allen handled...

Can Tuomo Ruutu play tough minutes again?

Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford was a guest on NHL On The Fly the other morning and I heard him make a few interesting comments in regards to what moves he would make in free agency. He basically stated that he thinks he can sign a veteran defenseman in the early part of July but isn't sure if he can get a top-six forward because of the market. I reviewed the options for...

Boucher Out 4-6 Months With Shoulder Injury

from Michael Smith of the Carolina Hurricanes website, Brian Boucher is expected to miss 4-6 months due to a shoulder injury, according to Carolina Hurricanes’ President and General Manager Jim Rutherford. Rutherford said the injury occurred within the last week, and the 35-year-old goaltender will be having surgery in the coming days. Justin Peters, who is an impending unrestricted...

Oh, brothers! Olczyk's sons reunite at 'Canes camp

The Carolina Hurricanes have reunited another set of brothers - and this time it's not the Staals. College players Tommy and Eddie Olczyk are the sons of former NHL player and coach Ed Olczyk. They're getting their first on-ice taste of the NHL this week during the Hurricanes' rookie conditioning camp. And in a remarkable coincidence, the Olczyks' reunion came less...

A Very Staaly Wedding.

Scene: Somewhere in Ontario, JORDAN STAAL is getting married.(This is actually of Marc Staal's wedding, but it;s a nice picture that I took from What's up, ya Sieve)  JORDAN: Man, I’m so nervous…I don’t know if I should go through with this. ERIC: Jordan, don’t be a frickin’ puss. There’s a million reasons you wanted to get hitched to this girl, right? JORDAN...
