Washington Capitals goaltender Tomas Vokoun suffered a groin injury during Thursday’s 3-2 shootout win over the Boston Bruins. The injury appears to be just enough to keep him out of the lineup for the remainder of the season and playoffs, if the Capitals can clinch. Tomas Vokoun, shown in this file photo, may not return with the Washington Capitals for the remainder of the season, of playoffs even. Vokoun injured the groin earlier in the season and missed six games. This time around, Washington Comcast Sportsnet is reporting the road to recovery will require the rest of the season and playoffs. From Comcast Sportsnet: “Vokoun re-injured his groin in the first period of the Capitals’ win in Boston when an opposing forward kicked out his skate while Vokoun was prone in his crease. The play occurred prior to Jason Chimera’s 5-minute charging major with 6 minutes remaining and Vokoun did not want to remove himself from the game and force backup Michal Neuvirth into coming in cold on a 5-minute penalty kill. But after making a routine save late with 1:35 left in the period and 35 seconds remaining on the penalty to Chimera, Vokoun pulled himself from the game and did not return.” So, who’s up for Washington? It’s Michael Neuvirth, of course. He anchored Saturday’s win from the crease with a 39-save performance, facing 41 shots. He’s 13-12-5 with a 2.85 goals against average and three shutouts this season. As for Vokoun, his days may be numbered as a Capital if management doesn’t see the value in re-signing an injury prone goalie. His $1.5-million contract expires July 1. Is this the part where Neuvirth makes his case to be the next franchise goalie for the Capitals?   Matthew Wilson is editor of Center Ice Chat. Follow him on Twitter @Mattjw24.
