A major question facing the Philadelphia Flyers coming into this shortened season was how Ilya Bryzgalov would play. After all, the Flyers have the ability now to buyout 2 contracts that weigh them down and could affect their salary cap compliance. Many fans speculated that the target of one of those buyouts would be Bryz. He signed a 9 year $51 million deal to finally end the Flyers goaltending carousel. While there were stretches last season where he was excellent, there were many other occasions where he was disappointing. After the Flyers got off to an 0-3 start, there was even more talk. But Bryzgalov wasn’t the issue for the Flyers. In fact, Bryzgalov has played really well so far this season. The guy who appeared to struggle handling the puck, squaring up the shooter and undoubtedly handling the Philadelphia media and fans last year, has looked like a different player thus far. Many NHL pundits believed that with Bryz’s first year out of the way, there was nowhere for him to go but up. His start in the KHL during the lockout didn’t do much to instill confidence. However, after last night’s 7-1 destruction of the Florida Panthers during which Bryz was stellar and stopped 30 shots. He stopped everything thrown at him except for a break away from Florida’s Peter Mueller. Bryzgalov is now 2-3 with a 2.22 GAA and a .923 save percentage. With the Flyers offense seemingly coming to life now, things could be coming together for the team. But it has all started with some excellent goaltending from everyone’s favorite target. The Flyers take on the Tampa Bay Lightning today at 6. Bryzgalov may sit for the fist time this season because of the back to back games. It won’t be because of poor play.
