Scott Levy/NHLI via Getty Images Though he was last year’s playoff hero, Chris Kreider got off to a tough start with the CT Whale during the NHL lockout, and his confidence was at an all-time low when he joined the Rangers for the start of the NHL season.  Kreider had been asked to round out his game in the AHL and the learning process was more difficult than he may have expected.  As a result, his offensive numbers took a nosedive. Still, the Rangers saw just how valuable Kreider could be last spring and handed him a job to start the season despite his struggles.  One highlight reel goal against Martin Brodeur notwithstanding, Kreider failed to generate much of anything offensively in third line duty, so the Blueshirts made the difficult decision to return Kreider to the Whale two weeks ago while keeping 20-year-old JT Miller with the big club. Just like that, the switch seemed to flip for Kreider.  He’s scored 6 goals and an assist in eight games since being demoted, dwarfing the ...

Rangers template for success shouldn’t change as deadline nears

Back in the offseason I spoke frequently about the Rangers need to acquire players who fit their team template. The three main ingredients needed to restock the Rangers were roster balance, skating, and effort. As the deadline approaches, the Rangers should stick to those three ingredients when evaluating their own team and what’s available on the marketplace. As for Tortorella...

Lundqvist May Have Literally Saved the Season

With the Rangers down 1-0 to the Hurricanes and looking more lethargic by the second, it seemed like the season was slipping away in front of our eyes. So in the second period when Riley Nash popped open on the crease and had the final nail in the Blueshirts coffin on his stick, Rangers fans saw this lost season flash in front of their eyes. That was until Henrik Lundqvist decided...

Rangers Talked Gaborik Trade With Vancouver; Interested in Perry?

During a segment on Hockey Night In Canada's "Hot Stove Tonight," Elliotte Friedman says that the Rangers might have discussed a potential trade for Marian Gaborik with the Vancouver Canucks, but it wasn't a good match. Friedman adds that as part of his limited no trade clause Gaborik has given the Rangers 10 teams he cannot be traded to. Here's the...

Goal breakdown: Rangers snap losing streak, beat Carolina in shootout

The Rangers finally righted the ship in more ways than one. They ended their scoreless streak at a little over two hours, they ended their pointless streak at three games, and snapped their three game losing streak. The Rangers came out flat in the first –as per usual– but dominated the second, third and overtime periods. The game was eventually won in a shootout when J.T. Miller...

It’s about execution, not coaching

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images The Rangers succeeded last year because they executed. They followed the system, they executed and they won. Many are looking at the coaching staff for the three game slide, but in reality it’s about execution from the players. It’s been widely known that coach Tortorella uses a 2-1-2 forecheck, which is not a defensive system. It’s a bit of a misnomer...

Rangers beat 'Canes in shootout

Rangers rookie J.T. Miller fumbled his way to a goal in the third round of a shootout and New York snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night. The 20-year-old Miller skated in slowly on Dan Ellis and briefly lost the puck before calmly gathering it and scoring from a tough angle near the goal line. Rick Nash scored in the opening...

Rangers’ Struggle Continues As Penguins Cruise To Eighth Straight Win

After dropping the first two meetings on home ice, the New York Rangers tried their luck on the road in Pittsburgh for a matinee affair with the division leading Penguins.  Pittsburgh is currently riding a seven game winning streak and is tied with the Montreal Canadiens for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with 40 [...]

Game 29 Preview: Rangers at Devils

Tony Kurdzuk/The Star-Ledger After a hot start, the Devils have crashed back to Earth, and sit two points ahead of the Rangers in the standings, although the Rangers have a game in hand. In the month of March, the Devils have struggled mightily, posting a record of 3-4-2. For comparisons sake, the Rangers have a record of 5-4-0 in that span. This is one of those four point swing...

It’s The Time Of Season To Talk Trades

The latest from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, • The New York Rangers have been on the lookout for a top-four, right-handed defenseman and a source told me Tuesday that the Blueshirts have interest in veteran Dan Boyle from the Sharks. There’s an obvious connection there, with Rangers head coach John Tortorella having Boyle in Tampa when both won the Stanley Cup in 2004. ...

Connecticut Whale 3, Springfield Falcons 2

By Wil Goldsholl Hartford, CT, March 17, 2013 - In the Connecticut Whale locker room on Saturday night, Jason Missiaen’s goaltending partner, Cam Talbot, gave a shout in passing, “There ya go, Mish! Big as a house!” The mild-mannered, six-foot-eight goaltender gave pause to flash a grin before continuing to praise his defense for help with rebounds and screens. The Chatham...
