To good news for Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin: Capitals coach Adam Oates in playing with offensive players again, Wojtek Wolski and Mike Ribeiro. The bad news: Oates really wants to see what he can do at right wing, where Ovechkin isn’t as comfortable. Alex has yet to score an even-strength goal this season. At least he got busy offensively during Washington’s grim 6-3 loss to the Penguins. He earned lots of good scoring chances in that game.“If I don’t have the chances, I say, ‘Okay, what’s wrong with me? What’s stopping me?’” Ovechkin told the Washington Post Tuesday “But last two games, last three games, I have chances. I have opportunities, especially against Pittsburgh. I feel like I have really good chances to score. Sometimes I have to be more concentrate on the puck . . . A couple times the rebound right there and my stick was high.”Toronto Maple Leafs star Phil Kessel is going through the same thing. He hasn’t scored a goal, period, in nine games this season. The Cap

Capitals give out Nicklas Backstrom Gnomes

During last night’s home game against the Maple Leafs (another loss), the Washington Capitals handed out Nicklas Backstrom Gnome’s to the first 18,000 fans in attendance. This prompted twitter to explode with fans taking all kinds of pictures with the Backstrom Gnome doing different things like watching the game, drinking a beer, or otherwise just having a good old gnome time...

John Carlson Explains the Weirdest Goal Ever; And Where to Start With the Caps?

Just dump the puck in. That’s what Capitals defenseman John Carlson was thinking when he sent it into the Pens’ zone in the second period and headed for the bench. It had been a long shift, and he was just trying to get a change. Then he noticed the guy who was supposed to be swapping with him—Mike Green—had his hands in the air, celebrating. Carlson’s shot had gone in...

Sergei Fedorov likely to take a bow with CSKA Moscow

When Sergei Fedorov was hired as CSKA Moscow's general manager last summer as part of a Vladimir Putin's impetus to rejuvenate Moscow's professional hockey teams, and coming with Fedorov's hiring was an infusion of cash via a sponsorship deal with Russia's second-largest oil and natural gas giant, Rosneft (the largest oil and natural gas company, Gazprom, is a...

It was Nicklas Backstrom Garden Gnome Giveaway Night on Tuesday at the Verizon Center in D.C.  as the Washington Capitals hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs. And by the looks of all the photos uploaded to the interwebs, a grand time was had by one and all. Fehr Thinks of Caps as “a Pretty Old Team”

“I’ve never experienced a start to a season like this,” Karl Alzner said after the Capitals’ 3-2 loss Tuesday to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Capitals, however briefly, have the worst record in hockey right now, although they’ve played three more games than the Calgary Flames, who are second to last. The regression has been across the board. The offense does not produce...

No Need To Move Ovechkin

from Neil Greenberg of the Washington Post, I get it. The outlook is grim. The Capitals are in last place in the NHL with a 2-7-1 record and will likely miss the playoffs. They have a minus-13 goal differential (worst in league) and have yet to score more than three goals in a game. Their penalty kill is ranked 23rd in the league, which is compounded by the fact they have...

The Last Place Team

In a shortened season the effect of a fast or slow start will be more significant than in a normal season.  The team currently in last place is far from the weakest team in the NHL but they are off to a slow start.  The Washington Capitals have a 2-8 record with one regulation tie point for a total of five points.  This is currently the worst record in the NHL.  This result...

Hockey, Improving The High School Experience By Hurting Everyone There

I really enjoyed watching this commercial for a Michigan-area high school hockey game between schools Clarkston and Lake Orion, but I can’t settle on a reason why. What I have so far includes:1. As a Washington Capitals fan, the NHL is basically the saddest thing to me ever right now, and I have to remember that I like the sport whether or not it’s crushing my will to live.2...

Rapid Rewind: No Contest. Capitals 3, Penguins 6

Alex Ovechkin had a secondary assist but once again made little impact on Sunday's game. (Yahoo!) The Washington Capitals were spanked on home ice Sunday afternoon by the Pittsburgh Penguins, falling 6-3.  After falling behind twice, Washington tied the game twice before Pittsburgh pulled away with three goals in the second period, two of which came in a little over half...

Gameday: at Pittsburgh, Feb. 7

Forever linked, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin are going in different direactions...rapidly. (Clydeorama) The Washington Capitals are in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on the Penguins this evening as they continue to look for a boost in form.  The Capitals, having lost two in a row, most recently a 3-2 decision at the hands of the Leafs Tuesday are 2-7-1 on the season for...

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In a Super Bowl Sunday matinee that featured superstars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Alex Ovechkin, it was Chris Kunitz who stole the spotlight, scoring a hat trick to send the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 6-3 victory over the Washington Capitals.
