The first time Edmonton Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk saw the San Jose Sharks, they blasted him for six first-period goals. Thursday night he forced the unbeaten Sharks into overtime and then the shootout with the scored tied 2-2. San Jose prevailed, but not before gaining a healthy appreciation for Dubnyk’s potential.Other organizations are noticing him too. “Dubnyk’s always been big but seems quieter in the net, letting the play come to him now,” said one NHL pro scout told the Edmonton Journal.Aside from his one disastrous game, Dubnyk has stopped 188 of 199 shots. This continued his steady trend of professional improvement. His appearances have increased each year while his goals-against average has gone down. During his final 13 starts last season, he posted a 2.04 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage.Dubnyk got ready for the lockout-shortened season by playing for Canada in the Spengler Cup Tournament. With Nikolai Khabibulin injured to start the season, he should...

Is Devan Dubnyk A #1 Goalie?

from Jonathan Willis of The Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal, The Edmonton Oilers’ only realistic internal choice in net right now is Devan Dubnyk. Backup Nikolai Khabibulin is playing out the string off a brilliant career that should have ended before he joined the team; he’s old, often injured, not very good when healthy and above all not a credible alternative...

Richard Cloutier: Oilers Desire to Make Deals Now? None

There are three types of players in this world: Those you trade, and those you hang on to. Sorry, I'm bad at math. As the Oilers move forward, we know certain players aren't going anywhere: Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Justin Schultz, Jordan Eberle, and Nail Yakupov. You can completely ignore any trade rumor involving these five, because it's bogus. There...

Richard Cloutier: Horcoff Out; Paajarvi Out; Lander in; Petrell Has a Sore Paw

As I suspected, Shawn Horcoff was injured by the perfectly innocent hit from behind provided by Phoenix winger Shane Doan. Not only should have Doan received a penalty for that hit, but it should have been sent to the league for review. Absolute cheap-shot. Anton Lander has been called up and will play for Horcoff tonight. In order for the Oilers to make roster room, it was necessary...

Sharks move to 7-0 after shootout win over Oilers

SAN JOSE -- Edmonton's Devan Dubnyk became the first goalie to stop Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, but his Oilers teammates couldn't end the Sharks' other streak. San Jose improved to a perfect 7-0 as Michal Handzus and Dan Boyle scored in the shootout for a 3-2 win over the young Oilers on Thursday night. "It was a pretty good road game," Dubnyk said...

Top Rookie Of The Early Season

Before the lockout shortened season began the clear rookie of the year choice was Justin Schultz of the Edmonton Oilers.  He led the AHL in scoring for much of the first part of the season as a rookie defenceman.  Projecting that to the NHL he looked like a likely star.  He has been a solid rookie.  He leads all rookie defencemen with five points so far this year but another...
