Sidney Crosby last played in a NHL game December 5th. So far this season, he has played in eight games. The Penguins have played 36. Crosby played in only 41 games last season after showing the dreaded "concussion-like symptoms" after repeated blows to the head in early January.

It has been nearly a year since Crosby has played significant time. Honestly, I'm not even a big hockey fan, but there is nothing better than the NHL playoffs. Major League Baseball and the NFL playoffs cannot compare. And for me, Crosby, when he's healthy, is probably the closest we'll get to seeing what Wayne Gretzky looked like in his prime.

As much as I'd love to see Crosby on the ice now, I'd much rather see him walking upright with all his faculties in 40 years. If the Penguins, and to their credit, are concerned enough to hold out their franchise player for almost a year due to a concussion, Crosby should seriously consider retiring. There isn't a helmet anyone can make that will protect your brain from smashing against the inside of your head. It's impossible. What I'm saying here is the NHL cannot protect him. Hockey by its very nature is an aggressive sport. Contact happens. All it takes is one hit the wrong way, and Crosby won't be able to remember what he had for breakfast.

I even hate to say it. Crosby is the face of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and gave name recognition to the NHL in the post-Gretzky void. It's the writing on the wall, though. It's time to hang 'em up, Sid the Kid. It's time to learn to coach or the be the best spokesperson for brain injuries ever, while you have the chance.
