Frans Nielsen showing that he can be a true No. 2 center behind John Tavares

Frans Nielsen's pride and joy comes from being a smart player in his own zone. The 29-year-old Islanders center talks often and candidly about wanting to be defensively responsible before thinking about offense. That responsibility is admirable but it has often been at odds with the role Nielsen is asked to play: That of a No. 2 center a forward who provides secondary offense...

Dee Karl: Isles Game Day: Filling Holes

With Lubo Visnovsky out with a concussion and Michael Grabner being punished, the Isles line-up has a few holes in it. But Jack Capuano has no real problems filling them. This morning at practice, Newsday's Art Staple has informed us that Capuano has decided Andrew MacDonald will take Visnovsky spot on the first power play unit. Matt Donovan with pair with PM Bouchard for...

Islanders' Visnovsky leaves with concussion

New York Islanders defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky suffered a concussion during the first period of his team's game Saturday night against the Carolina Hurricanes at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Visnovsky collected a puck behind the Islanders' net during the first period and took a hit from Hurricanes forward Radek Dvorak

Dee Karl: Lubo Out

The NY Islanders have officially placed defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky on IR as of 10/19/13 with a concussion. So, if that is three games without Vis, that should give Matt Donovan some time on the Power Play. Or.... It could put Radek Martinek back on the team. Either way, this is not the way the Isles would like to get through October when points count. Also, I'm...

A Spano Story: Review of ESPN's 30 for 30 film "Big Shot"

When you're able to make Mike Milbury, famously abrasive hockey analyst, a sympathetic figure over the course of a 90-minute documentary, well, you've certainly accomplished something. Unfortunately for ESPN and Kevin Connolly, the latest installment of their 30 for 30 series profiling former Islanders owner and professional con artist John Spano, that's just about...

Canucks-Islanders Preview

Captain John Tavares didn't mince words after the New York Islanders' latest defeat in order to hide his frustration stemming from the team's slump. He probably isn't very happy New York will have to try to bust out of it without two of its top contributors, either. Injured defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky and suspended forward Michael Grabner won't be in the lineup...

Game 9 By the Numbers: Hurricanes at Islanders

Another night, another one-goal game for the Hurricanes and they managed to come out on the right side of the coin in yesterday's tilt against the New York Islanders. Although, this game was much different from the other close contests that the Hurricanes have been involved in this year. Instead of battling back from an early deficit, the Canes built a strong 3-0 lead in the...

Sunday Fun Day

Robbie Russo (NYI 2011 4th) Four games on the Sunday prospect schedule with a mixed bag of results but at least there was some entertaining hockey to watch thanks to the various matchups. The New York Ranger and New York Islanders both saw 3 of their prospects in action on Sunday and only 1 did not have an effect on the outcome of his team's game. A rare Sunday college hockey...

NHL hockey: Michael Grabner hit on Nathan Gerbe

There could be another suspension coming, very shortly. New York Islanders forward Michael Grabner has a hearing on Monday with the department of player safety for this hit on Carolina Panthers forward Nathan Gerbe. My question, at what point to the players start realizing that you can not make these types of hits anymore. I think this is a violation of the NHL's Rule 48. In...
