Islanders assistant coach Brent Thompson was given a two-game suspension by the NHL on Friday for abusive comments he made following New York's overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Thursday night.
Thompson was assessed a game misconduct after the Rangers beat the Islanders with a power-play goal by Marian Gaborik.
The NHL said in a statement that Thompson will miss the next two games because of ''inappropriate and abusive comments'' he directed at on-ice officials.
The Rangers received the only three power plays in the game and converted on the last one seconds after a penalty was called when defenseman Michael Del Zotto was hauled down as he drove to the net.
Thompson will miss a home game against Washington on Saturday and a game at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

More Gaborik for Depth Rumors
Elliotte Friedman at CBC Sports piggybacks on the recent Marian Gaborik for depth rumor floated by Bruce Garrioch at the Ottawa Sun by stating the reason Gaborik might be available is the return could replace the depth they lost in the offseason.

In Staal’s absence, Rangers offense needed more than ever
The Rangers need Gaborik and the offense to help accommodate for Staal’s injury
It may seem an odd statement to make in light of an important defenseman being lost to injury, but the Rangers offense will need to produce consistently now more than ever. Despite the addition of Roman Hamrlik and the presence of multiple defensemen on the roster, the Rangers cannot reasonably expect...
Gaborik's OT goal caps Rangers' rally
Marian Gaborik scored a power-play goal 42 seconds into overtime, and the New York Rangers rallied for a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday night.
Gaborik took a feed in the high slot from Rick Nash, who got the Rangers even at 1 with 5:23 left in regulation, and fired in a shot for his eighth of the season and first in nine games.
The Rangers got their third power...
Rangers C Richards returns after missing 2 games
Rangers center Brad Richards is back in the New York lineup Friday night against the Ottawa Senators after missing two games following a hard hit into the boards five days earlier.
Richards, who sat out a pair of Rangers wins, skated on his own Friday as his teammates had the morning off, and felt well enough to return. No specific injury was announced, but New York coach John Tortorella...

Goal breakdown: Senators at Rangers
The Senators played the Rangers tough, as per usual. After the Sens opened up a 2-0 lead, the Rangers showed their grittiness and their willingness to fight back as they tied the game before the first period ended. But in the end, the Sens showed why they are still a playoff team despite being without three of their top players. On to the goals:
Lady luck is mean sometimes.

Where's the Secondary Scoring?
In the game recap comments section last night, reader "slapshot13j" asked if anyone knew when the last time a 3rd or 4th line player scored in a game for the Rangers was.
While I assumed this was a rhetorical question, TheNYRBlog's James Wrabel actually came up with the answer: February 10th by Arron Asham vs. the Lightning.
That can't be. It's impossible...
Mr. Third Period
Being New York sports fans we're very familiar with the "Mr. October" and "Mr. November" nicknames, but if Rick Nash continues his late game heroics we're going to have to add "Mr. Third Period" to the list as all eight of his goals this season have come in the final frame. Including last night's game tying goal on Long Island...
