Tonight in Ottawa the Islanders played exactly how, generally speaking, you might expect them to. The offense was in mid-season form with five goals, multiple breakaways, a staggering 57 shots on goal and 90 (!) shot attempts. On defense, there were some mistakes and lapses interspersed with goal-creating jumps into the offensive zone and some soft goals let in by the starting netminder. Speaking of Evgeni Nabokov, he allowed four goals on 31 shots, which isn’t particularly bad. But there were certainly a couple of those four that he would like to have back. The second goal he allowed could have been a real wrench in the Isles’ fortunes — credit to them for battling back — but it was a Mike Zibanejad shot that ticked off his glove and into the net, putting Ottawa up 2-0 heading into the first intermission. Ottawa notched two in the final two minutes of a first period the Isles otherwise dominated. The other blatant miscue was a Clark MacArthur wrap around goal in the second that N...

In his first game as an Isle, Thomas Vanek is primed to produce (Nov. 1 Daily Plays)

LW Thomas Vanek, New York Islanders – $9,388: Vanek was quiet in his Islander debut. His linemate John Tavares was also held off the score sheet, which doesn’t happen very often. Look for the two to find some chemistry together against a Sens team that has allowed 11 goals over their last two games.   C Patrik Berglund, St.Louis Blues – $4,244: Berglund has not been great...

Tavares, Vanek carry Isles over B's

John Tavares, Andrew MacDonald and Thomas Vanek scored second-period goals, and Kevin Poulin made 26 saves for his first win of the season as the New York Islanders beat the Boston Bruins 3-1 on Saturday night. Tavares knocked a loose puck past Bruins backup goalie Chad Johnson at 6:15 of the second for his sixth goal of the season. The assist went to his new left wing Vanek, who...

GARTH'S CORNER: Vanek Celebrates Career Game #600 In Style

It didn't take long for Thomas Vanek to form a bond with his new linies, John Tavares and Kyle Okposo. Two games to be exact. Vanek's blind, back-pass to John Tavares led to his first point as an Islander was a thing of beauty. Vanek played his 600th regular-season game, his second with the Islanders since he was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday...

Dan Petriw: Isles win wild one; Strome's wild night

Like I've said all year the Islanders are if anything always entertaining. In a game where the Isles trailed by two goal twice, they continued to rally and won 5-4 in a shootout. They survived yet another shaky start from Evgeni Nabokov who was not good during regulation but saved his best for the shootout stopping all three attempts. The defense was ok; Andrew MacDonald had...

Dan Petriw: Isles in Canada's Capital to face the Sens

Two teams that are trying to right their seasons square off tonight as the Islanders are in Ottawa to face off with the Senators. The Islanders will roll out the same lineup that were defeated by the Rangers on Tuesday. In net Evgeni Nabokov will get the start between the pipes. With the Isles playing again tomorrow against the Bruins, I would expect Kevin Poulin to start...

Not a pretty night

Ryan Pulock (Brandon Wheat Kings) To say that Friday night was an ugly evening might be insulting to anything ugly as New York Ranger and New York Islander prospects saw their teams combine for a 4-7-1 evening (with 1 healthy scratch). From the 11 games involving skaters they combined for a 2-2-4 evening which again did not make for a pretty night. Tonight's Star Ryan Pulock...

Neilsen lifts Islanders to 5-4 SO win at Ottawa

Frans Neilsen scored the tying goal in the third period and then netted the only goal of the shootout as the New York Islanders beat the Ottawa Senators 5-4 on Friday night. Neilsen moved in on goalie Robin Lehner and put a backhand in on the Islanders' second and last shot of the shootout. The Islanders (5-5-3) outshot the Senators 57-31 and got goals from Matt Martin, John...

Islanders bury the Bruins 3-1, keep the B's stuttering

Islanders-Senators Preview

The New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators are struggling to stop opponents. Friday night's contest in Ottawa could be a high-scoring affair as New York seeks just its second win in seven meetings. Both have lost four of five, with the Islanders (4-5-3) allowing at least three goals in each and the Senators (4-6-2) surrendering 11 goals over back-to-back losses. Each club permits...

Travis Yost: G13: Islanders @ Senators

A three-game losing streak has forced Paul MacLean to consider some rather radical lineup changes. The new-look combinations will get their first crack at success when they take on the New York Islanders on Friday night. Ottawa -- having dropped consecutive games to Anaheim, San Jose, and Chicago -- continues searching for something to alleviate the defensive woes on this team...

Bruins-Islanders Preview

Keeping the puck out of their own net continues to be a problem for the New York Islanders. It certainly has been in recent games against the Boston Bruins. The Islanders overcame those defensive deficiencies for one game and will try to win two straight for the first time this season Saturday night against the visiting Bruins. A determined effort by the Islanders on Friday at...

Who Wants To See A Scary Graph?

So it's still very early, we're only through 16% of the schedule. But as opposed to the early efforts vs Anaheim and San Jose, I'm finding it really hard right now to write off allowing 57 shots (new franchise record!) to the 2013/14 New York Islanders. In 13 games this season the Senators have allowed 50+ shots 3 times, in the previous 1576 games of the franchises...

Travis Yost: A Game Summary

It's hard to piece the same words together over, and over, and over. The team has one good line. The team has one good pairing. The rest of the combinations are something of a calamity. And tonight's 5-4 shootout loss was an absolute gift from the hockey gods (and Evgeni Nabokov), giving the Ottawa Senators a point they almost certainly didn't deserve. First and foremost...
