Blue Jackets right winger Derek Dorsett is 24 years old, too young to get the comparison made between himself and the old-school cartoon character Gumby. But it certainly applies. Dorsett appeared to suffer a serious injury last Saturday in a 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins, when he twisted his left leg under him as he fell backward following a collision with Boston goaltender Tim Thomas. Broken fibula? Torn knee ligaments? High-ankle sprain? Each of those seemed possible when the clip was reviewed via replay. The Blue Jackets feared it was a season-ending injury. "I got lucky," said Dorsett, who joined the Blue Jackets for Thursday's morning skate, only four days after suffering what remains an undisclosed injury. "It's sort of a general-area injury. It's pretty sore, and I can tell I did something. But I got pretty lucky. Hopefully it won't take me too long to get back out there." Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said Dorsett could return on Saturday, when Columbus hosts the Tampa Bay Lightning in Nationwide Arena. NOTES, QUOTES --Onward they trudge. The Blue Jackets' play has steadied since the early part of the season, but they haven't been able to string anything bit of success together. In fact, the Jackets haven't won back-to-back games in regulation in 53 game, dating back to Feb. 25, 2011, of last season. --One of Blue Jackets Scott Arniel's first acts as coach was to take captain Rick Nash off the penalty kill in an attempt to keep his minutes down. Even though the Blue Jackets' PK is among the worst in the NHL, Arniel has no plans to change that philosophy. Nash, though, took over when Derek Dorsett (leg) went out of the lineup, and the Blue Jackets went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill against Vancouver. QUOTE TO NOTE: "How can we not be desperate in our predicament, where we are? Because we beat Vancouver the other night, we're going to take a night off? I certainly hope we didn't take (the Kings) for granted, because we're in no position to ever do that." -- Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel, after his club lost to the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Thursday in Nationwide Arena. ROSTER REPORTPLAYER NOTES: --C Jeff Carter scored his seventh goal of the season on Thursday versus the Los Angeles Kings. He's scored in four straight games now after a slow start to the season, but he nearly had another goal with 1.9 seconds to play. He was robbed by the glove of Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick. --G Steve Mason needed two liters of intravenous fluids after making his return to the lineup Tuesday in a 2-1 win over Vancouver. He hadn't started a game since Nov. 15, and it was clear rust had developed. Mason went down with a right quadriceps cramp late in the third period and had to leave the game temporarily. --RW Derek Dorsett could return Saturday versus Tampa Bay, even though he appeared to suffer a fairly serious lower left leg injury last week versus Boston. Dorsett is trying to build up strength in his left knee before he's ready to test it in game situations. MEDICAL WATCH: --LW Kristian Huselius (lower body) is out until February. --RW Derek Dorsett (lower left leg) is day-to-day. --G Mark Dekanich (groin) came up lame during warm-ups of a minor-league game on Nov. 11 and is out indefinitely. --D Radek Martinek (concussion) is out indefinitely.
