For the second summer in a row, Jaromir Jagr waited for a call that never came. Jagr waited and waited. The 41-year-old winger finally signed a one-year with the New Jersey Devils late in July. He was hoping for a call from the Flyers, who were flirting with the upper limit of the salary cap. “They didn’t have any room,” Jagr said. “Even if I signed for the minimum, they didn’t have the room. The reason I was waiting is because I was very comfortable here.” By late July, Jagr was getting antsy but would have made concessions if the Flyers had shown interest. “I would probably even not sign until training camp and wait to see what happens after training camp,” Jagr said. “Then I had a meeting with the Devils. I met Lou (Lamoriello, the team’s general manager), and we sit for five, six hours. He made me comfortable.” The aging winger was also hoping to stay in Philadelphia in the summer of 2012, after a breakout year for both his linemates — Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell. The Flyers weren’t willing to pay the Czech native, then 40 years old, the $4.5 million that the Dallas Stars were. Instead, they made mammoth-size pitches to the two prized free agents that both signed with the Minnesota Wild — Ryan Suter and Zach Parise. “Everyone was waiting for those two guys to get signed,” said Jagr, who signed with Dallas a day before Suter and Parise signed with Minnesota. “I didn’t know what’s gonna happen.” Now Jagr is the Devils’ leading scorer, and after a month under his belt in New Jersey, he feels like he made the right call. “I’m happy right now, don’t get me wrong. I’m very happy,” said Jagr, who signed a one-year, $2 million pact with the Devils this offseason. “I love Lou. He’s honest. If you play bad, he’ll tell you. If you play good, he’ll tell you. He’s an honest guy. I have no complaints after signing with the Devils.” So might the Flyers have another shot at Jagr after this year? In August, Jagr hinted that this season might be his last. Thursday, he seemed to change his tune.
