DALLAS -- Jaromir Jagr's shootout goal was the difference for the Dallas Stars in a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes, ending a four-game losing streak by the Stars. Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith got a glove on Jagr's shot but it still landed in the back of the Dallas net. "Yeah, it was big (to snap our losing streak)," Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said. "First of all, it's a division rival and we've got them tomorrow night, too. I think the win itself was best for our psyche and our confidence. It gives us something to try to build off of." Jagr's goal came in the fourth round of the shootout. Phoenix's Radim Vrbata scored in the second round and Jamie Benn kept the Stars alive with a third-round goal. Dallas (3-4-1) had taken a 2-0 lead in the first period after Antoine Roussel, who was making his NHL debut, scored the first goal of his career midway through the period, beating Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith with a backhand over his left shoulder. Stars rookie defenseman Brenden Dillon added the first goal of his career two minutes later with an unassisted tally, blasting a 58-foot slapshot that deflected off the Coyotes' Derek Morris before landing in the back of the net. "That's the kind of game we want (from Roussel)," Gulutzan said. "We want the energy. He was good in the face-off circle. I thought the energy that he brought helped our club and the goal he got gave us a little lift." However, Phoenix's Radim Vrbata cut the Dallas lead to 2-1 with 6:00 before the opening intermission. Vrbata's shot deflected off the stick of Dallas center Jamie Benn to make it a one-goal game heading into the second. Phoenix (2-4-2) quickly tied it up in the second, needing just 45 seconds to make it 2-2 just one second after going off the power play. Martin Hanzal knocked home a rebound at the far post with a backhand after Oliver Ekman-Larsson's initial shot was denied by a pad save from Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen. Dallas recaptured the lead at 14:14 of the second when Michael Ryder beat Smith short side from the top of the left face-off circle for his fourth goal of the year. However, that lead again didn't last as Hanzal scored again at 18:26, this time getting the better of Lehtonen with a 39-foot wrister to the far side. "He (Hanzal) was a good player for us tonight," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett said. "He was a guy that was questionable whether he'd be in the lineup or not. He gave us a heck of a game." Hanzal had a pair of goals for Phoenix in the loss while Ekman-Larsson chipped in two assists and Vrbata had a goal and an assist. "I thought our team hung around the game, competed really hard and gave ourselves a chance to win but in the end gave a point up," Tippett said. "We'll take that point, put it in the bank but we go home tomorrow. On home ice, we need two goals tomorrow." NOTES: Dallas defenseman Jamie Oleksiak and Roussel made their NHL debuts. Oleksiak, 20, was the 14th overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft while Roussel, 23, was signed as a free agent during the offseason. Roussel is the first Dallas player to score in his debut since Ray Sawada did in Feb. 2009 against Edmonton. ... Smith started between the pipes for the first time since Jan. 23 against Columbus. Smith had missed Phoenix's previous two games with a lower body injury after not dressing in the two games prior. ... Dallas center Derek Roy missed a third straight game with a groin injury but should return on Monday at Colorado. ... Phoenix is now 0-2-1 on the road. ... Dallas center Jamie Benn, a 2012 All-Star, made his season home debut after signing a five-year contract last Thursday.
