The Philadelphia Flyers have suffered through a rash of concussions this season. On Saturday, the team announced that winger James Van Riemsdyk will be out of the lineup indefinitely with, you guessed it, a concussion.

Matt Read, Claude Giroux, Brayden Schenn and of course, Flyers Captain, Chris Pronger have all missed time this year because of concussions. Pronger will miss at least the rest of this season with is being called post concussion syndrome, an ailment that cut short the career of another Flyers captain, Keith Primeau.

Van Riemsdyk, despite an outstanding performance in last year’s postseason, has not had a stellar season. He has 11 goals and 11 assists in 37 games. The news of JVR’s concussion coincided with the squelching of trade rumors that had the Flyers shipping JVR to Toronto for Brayden Schenn’s brother, defenseman Luke Schenn.

Rumors started circulating at the midpoint of the week, but on Friday, Toronto GM Brian Burke spoke to the media and told them that a trade would not be happening.

That leads me to think that the trade could have been squashed because of JVR’s injury.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren speculated that the concussion could have been suffered because of two straight games that Van Riemsdyk was hit in the head. Others, including teammates think it could have been suffered as long as 4 games ago when JVR was hit with an elbow in a game against Ottawa.

Regardless of when the injury was sustained, the outcome is just the same: JVR is on the shelf for a while.
