Toronto Marlies forward Joey Crabb was named the AHL’s top player of the week. The 27 year old from Anchorage, Alaska scored three goals and two assists over two games with Marlies last week to win these honors. Crabb is currently tied in team scoring with a high of 12 points. Crabb has only played 77 games in his NHL career between the Atlanta Thrashers and Toronto Maple Leafs. Crabb is not a top 6 offensive player, although his best hockey season was last year, recording 24 goals and 53 points over 79 games with the AHL team Chicago Wolves. As a junior he enjoyed an outstanding season in 2004/05, helping the Colorado College Tigers earn a trip to the Frozen Four. Crabb was a significant offensive contributor at that time, to an already offensively deep Colorado team. He finished the season third on the team in scoring with 32 points (16 goals & 16 assists). When I watch Crabb play I feel that he has good size and does not shy away from playing physical, along with havin...

James Reimer injury convenient for Maple Leafs

The collision Saturday night between Montreal Canadiens captain Brian Gionta and Toronto Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer is an unfortunate injury for the break-out net minder. However, if Reimer is going to be hurt, he may as well sit one game out against the talented Philadelphia Flyers. The unreliable Johan Gustavsson proved to be able to make his teammates work a bit harder yet...

Franson May Be Available

from Pierre LeBrun of ESPN, I heard from sources on other teams Monday that Gauthier was phoning around looking for help on defense. The thing is, he’s not alone. Tampa and the New York Rangers are among the other teams also looking for blue-line help. It just so happens that Cody Franson is available in Toronto, although I’m not sure whether any of those three teams...

James Reimer Status Update

In yesterdays 5-4 over time win over the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs starting goalie James Reimer got knocked on the head during the first period of play. Reimer played the rest of the first, but what shocked a lot of people is when Jonas Gustavsson took the net for the start of the second period. Now even though Gustavsson won but let in 3 goals over two periods. I expressed...

Early Top Defencemen

I am looking at the early season leaders for the various NHL awards. Today, i have my first leader for the Norris Trophy. It is Dion Phaneuf of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He is tied for the scoring lead among defencemen with nine points. His +7 +/- rating is the best in the league among defencemen and tied for the league lead overall. Phaneuf is a surprise Norris leader after...

Battle of the Blades III Review: Featuring dweeby Boyd Devereaux

Welcome back to Puck Daddy's enduring, long-suffering coverage of Battle of the Blades, a program that, prior to being assigned by my editor to watch, I would have claimed you couldn't pay me to watch. As much as I find this show to be insufferable -- heck, that word might not even be strong enough -- I should admit up front that this week's program had a few tolerable...

Monstrous

At some point, the Maple Leafs are going to have to start dealing in facts when it comes to The Monster, goalie Jonas Gustavsson. Pretty much every game Gustavsson plays, he gives up a whack of goals, almost always three...
