Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares will captain Canada at the 2024 IIHF World Hockey Championship, Hockey Canada announced Saturday morning.

Calgary Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane, St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko and Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Damon Severson were named as assistant captains.

Canada played its opening game against Great Britain without Tavares in the lineup on Saturday morning. Tavares arrived in Czechia and is expected to play in Sunday’s game against Denmark.

Tavares recorded 29 goals and 65 points in 80 games with the Maple Leafs this season, before registering one goal and one assist in a seven-game playoff loss to the Boston Bruins. It was the first sign of Tavares showing some signs of decline and this could be a showcase for him to prove that he’s still capable of being considering among the world’s elite.

The 33-year-old is eligible for an extension on July 1 and spoke about his desire to remain with the Maple Leafs during the team’s end-of-year media availability on Monday. Although many have considered Tavares as a logical trade candidate, he has a full no-movement clause and doesn’t seem particularly inclined to waive it.

“I haven’t put much thought to it, but I mean, I love playing here,” Tavares said. “I think it’s a remarkable place to play. And, you know, when I committed here six years ago, you know, obviously I saw a tremendous amount of talent and an amazing hockey market and organization that’s fully committed to winning.”

Although it hasn’t registered at the NHL level, Tavares has won prolifically with Hockey Canada. Tavares is a 2014 Olympic gold medalist, and won gold at the 2008 and 2009 World Juniors. This will mark Tavares’ fourth appearance at the worlds.

It won’t help Maple Leafs fans overcome the sting of losing to the Bruins in the most crushing fashion possible but this tournament is an opportunity for some instant redemption and we’ll keep you updated on Tavares’ efforts throughout the competition.
