RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- Jussi Jokinen scored two goals, Cam Ward made 22 saves for his 18th career shutout and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 3-0 on Friday night. Jiri Tlusty added a late goal and Eric Staal had two assists, including the early hustle play that led to Carolina's eighth short-handed goal of the season. They helped Carolina beat the Southeast Division-leading Capitals for the first time this season and defeat them in regulation at home for the first time in more than two years. Tomas Vokoun stopped 30 shots for Washington, which had won four of five and entered 8-0-1 in its last nine against Carolina. The Capitals were 0 for 3 on the power play. Ward earned his fourth career shutout against Washington -- the most of any goalie. He was impenetrable in his second shutout of the season and first since blanking Chicago in October. His best save might have come midway through the second period, when he froze while making a pretty glove save on Mathieu Perreault's slap shot, perhaps unsure of whether he actually had the puck. Jokinen scored once on the power play and once when Carolina was down a man while once again playing his best against the Capitals. Four of his seven goals this season have come against them, including his team's lone goal in a 2-1 loss in Washington five nights earlier. Jokinen would have had a hat trick by the second intermission -- had Vokoun not used his glove to rob him on a breakaway with 7 12 minutes left in the second. He put the Hurricanes up 2-0 in the final minute of the second. With 29 seconds left on an interference minor to Dennis Wideman, Jay Harrison fired a shot off Vokoun's pads and Jokinen sent a rebound past the goalie. That came after Staal made the key play that led to the Hurricanes' first goal with 7:17 left in the first. Hustling and forechecking on the penalty kill, the Carolina captain poked the puck from John Carlson just inside the blue line. Staal then tapped the puck to Jokinen, who was storming toward Vokoun and beat the goalie with a wrist shot that left Carlson whacking his stick on the ice in frustration. NOTES: Staal has points in four straight home games. ... Only the New Jersey Devils (11) have more short-handed goals than the Hurricanes. ... Washington RW Mike Knuble rang the left post while facing an open net roughly 2 minutes into the second. ... Carolina C Jeff Skinner played his first home game since returning from a concussion that cost him 16 games.

Zac Dalpe in the top-six

Yesterday it was announced that Zac Dalpe will be called up from Charlotte and that he could be playing on the second line in Alexei Ponikarovsky's spot. This has gotten many fans excited because Dalpe is known as the type of player "who needs top-six minutes to be effective" and a big reason why his point total in the NHL is so underwhelming is because he's usually...

We have some breaking news here tonight. According to Hurricanes beat writer Chip Alexander, the New Jersey Devils have acquired Alexei Ponikarovsky from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenseman Joe Sova and a 4th in the 2012 entry draft. It begins....Alexei Ponikarovsky traded to Devils

Jim Rutherford has been a busy man this week as he made his second trade in four days by dealing winger Alexei Ponikarovsky to the New Jersey Devils for a 2012 4th round pick and defenseman Joe Sova. The timing of this trade may have been a bit weird, but I think it is safe to say that we all saw a move like this coming. Ponikarovsky is a pending unrestricted free agent and signed...

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals 1/20/12 Scoring Chances

Games like the one we saw at the RBC Center haven't happened much this year. Not only did we witness Cam Ward's second shutout of the season, but we also got to see the Canes put together one of their best team efforts in a 3-0 win over the Washington Capitals. It was their first regulation win against the Caps in over two years, so I'm sure this was a big monkey off...

Carolina Hurricanes vs.New York Islanders 1/21/12 Scoring Chances

For whatever reason, overtime and the shootout have been cruel to the Canes this year, especially on the road. Last night's, 2-1 OT loss to the Islanders was the ninth OTL for the Canes this year and they have still yet to win a road overtime game. Frustrating isn't it? This game was definitely up there as one of the more frustrating losses of the season because Carolina...

Rapid Rewind: Blown Out

The Washington Capitals laid another tremendous egg on Friday night, falling at the hands of the cellar-dwelling Carolina Hurricanes 3-0 inside RBC center.  Tomas Vokoun made 30 saves in a very solid performance, but Jussi Jokinen scored twice and Jiri Tlusty added a third as the Caps failed to pick up any momentum from their win over the Canadiens on Wednesday.  It was the second...
